Podcast: "Stuff White People Like" author at Harvard Book Store

Christian Lander, creator of the hugely popular blog Stuff White People Like, and now the author of a book by the same name (coyly subtitled “The Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions”), pulled an overflow crowd to Harvard Book Store last night for his first appearance on his book tour. Poised, self-deprecating, and very fucking funny, the 29-year-old scrufty strawberry-blonde Canadian was almost impossible not to like.

Lander talked about the origin of the blog (it began while IM-ing with a pal about The Wire), the rapid-fire rise in popularity (from a couple hundred hits a day, to over 800,000), and how he handled the negative feedback (I’d rather be called racist than unfunny). He mixed humorous anecdotes about grad school, riding a fixed gear, and non-motorized boating with serious and well-considered comments on approaching race, a generational status-quest based on authenticity as opposed to wealth, and whether a whiter word than “kudos” exists in the English language.
