Gears of War 3: Female Character Added, Game Ruined

Don't worry. That title is a joke. Anya Stroud (at least, that's who we think that blonde woman is) in COG armor does not ruin this game. I think Gears 3 going to be pretty damn awesome. It probably would've been awesome without Anya -- but hey, she's there, and she's changed out of her pencil skirt, put on some armor, and picked up a lancer of her own. And that ... is damn cool.

Am I sad that the only reason Anya is allowed to be in Gears of War's army is because she can't make babies? Yeah, I think that's a pretty lame plot device. And Gears' off-screen rape camps -- all in the name of expediting the baby-making, of course! -- are ... also a stupid plot device (thanks to commenter Mediocrates for that link).

Is Gears realistic? Would rape camps happen if Locusts suddenly popped out of our planet? I don't know. All I can say is, I hope not. Does that make me a crazy man-hating bitch? Yeah, apparently. Actually, I would discourage you all from reading that forum ... or the comment threads on my last Gears 3 post ... or the comments at Kotaku (they linked me).

Instead, I'd like to direct your attention to the far more hilarious comments over at Destructoid. Some of my favorites include:

"Wouldn't a female character having a more central role detract from the burgeoning romance being cunningly built up between Marcus and Dom?" -- ChainThrow

"Probably one of the Carmine brothers is really a Carmine sister. Who is really the Locust Queen. Who is really Cole Train." -- AfroWalrus

"I'm gonna call it now: One of the Carmine's has an androgynous name and it turns out to be a chick. GEARS 3, CODE IT AND SHIP IT!" -- ZeroTolo

"People will bitch if she is built like an ox and people will bitch if she's the stereotypical female video game character. The world will still turn." -- RiotMonster

"... I think it's a mistake to show them as women in the first place. It's like they're noticably making a big deal out of it. Keep her in a helmet, Make her the same as all the guys (Don't make her damsel in distress or the super fighter girl) and then pull a Samus. Suddendly show that she is a woman but don't stop the game just keep going like nothing's happened. That's probably the best way to bring in a female character I can think of." -- GoldenGamerXero
(Hell, yeah!)

Truth is, I probably would've played the crap out of Gears 3 even if Alex Brand was in it saying "Princess" every five seconds ... OK, just kidding, that would've pissed anyone off. But even so, as a woman who enjoys shooters, I'm willing to accept some very small victories. Give me a playable female character who's insanely over-sexualized and completely brainless, and I'll run with it. I'm used to playing as dudes, so any time there's the opportunity to play as a woman -- even a lame one -- it's a pleasant privilege. It's even more of a victory if she does have a good line of dialogue or two -- and, by the way, unlike some bloggers, I don't care so much about whether the female character is sexy as hell or not. I believe in equal sexiness for all video-game characters. Gender equality, people. It can be a very, very pretty thing.

Anyway, this exciting new development is almost enough to make me want to make some COG armor (like this Anya cosplayer) instead of the Varia Suit I was planning to spend some of my savings on. Guess I'll just have to make both!

Really?! Have you guys even read the books!? If so then you would know that Anya's mom served as a gear while Anya just enlisted in the C.O.G This was before Emergance, hence before sex camps.

    Get your facts strait!

I'm glad that Anya is in gears 3 for the past two installments of this franchise of a game she had very small parts not really being included almost known as a nobody but glad to hear shell be a big part as one of the many main characters added to gears of war 3 and I hope they take ever map from first one and second one and install it into the gears 3 installment

Women aren't allowed to serve on the front lines of combat in real life because they're not physically and psychologically adapted to warfare. Popular media (movies, tv shows, video games) likes to depict women beating up men with karate moves and mowing down bad guys with machine guns to make people think women are just as tough as men. The inclusion of Anya as a playable character in GOW 3 is feminist propaganda.

I think the addition of a female character is perfect. What guy doesn't love a woman with a gun kicking some ass? What girl doesn't love seeing a female have a central role than just a voice that Marcus Screams so eloquently throughout the games while walking dramatically slow as if his legs get paralyzed when he talks to her or he is trying to hide something else from the cameras as the very thought of her voice speaking into his ear makes the blood flow (ANYA!). Hands down I am damn excited for this game. I waited a year for the first game and I'll wait a year for the last game!

    Um, excuse me...rape camps?

Hyperbole police, anyone?  Provide a link, please, to the existence of "rape camps" in the Gears of War world.  Someplace in the fiction, please.  If it's true, so be it - but please prove it.  Those are really, really strong words, and completely inappropriate ones if you can't prove it to be factually correct.

"Alex Brand was born in the city of Jilane[2]. After E-Day like many other women were sent to the breeding farms in Jilane to produce more children for the COG to maintain the war effort. It was not a happy time in her life. At the age of 12, she was raped by the facility's Director. At the age of 14, they tried to artificially inseminate her so she would produce offspring. The attempts failed and they attempted to impregnate her with more traditional methods. At the age of 18, she was declared barren and sent to boot camp to become a frontline gear. "

    -- from here:

    gearsofwar.wikia.com/.../Alex_Brand

You don't have to call them "rape camps" if you don't want to (the Gears universe has supplied you with "breeding farms" to use instead), but the sex isn't consensual. If you want to read more debate on the subject, this forum thread talks about it, but if you don't like the term "rape camps," then you may not like how often it's being thrown around here:

If you dont think anya (or who ever she is) wont be a great addition to the COG army then deal with it. I think its going to be awsome and will be a great addition to the COG army and a great help to Marcus Phinex, Dominic Santiago, Damon Baird, and Augustus Cole. Which I think personally is going to be so sweet in the game itself and will be the greatest game of the century.

I do think anya in the frontline would make a good addition to the Gears of War, however, I don't understand how she will keep up with the males (just compare her to cole and you get the idea). In Gears one and two, she's a skinny Control operator who looks like she couldn't lift a snub pistol but in the trailer she dons the super heavy gear armor with a lancer. How did she do that? Did she take massive amounts of advanced steroids that make muscles that don't show?

    Maddy -

Thanks for the details on the rape camps...kind of...you know what I mean.

I have to say that it reminds of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. I'm not sure that I would go after him for depicting women as being vessels for bearing food for starving humans in post-Apocalyptia. It's an effective method to describe just HOW horrible things have gotten.

So, if I turn this around on Gears of War...can I hold them to a different standard?

My biggest problem with the Gears of War franchise is the lack of adequate story within the game itself. I don't want to have to step outside the game to get the backstory. This idea of breeding farms is bloody horrible...but it does drive the point home as to just how desperate the situation is for humanity in the GoW universe.

It certainly also makes the COG much less sympathetic, however, which is a no-no for anything that wants commercial success...

Argh. I'm glad I got the details, but it left me feeling dirty. :(

Oh, who ever compared real life with women not being able to be on the front lines is stupid! This is Gears of War not WW2, stupid. Half of the things in the game doesn't make sense, like Lambient, Locust, Chainsaw Gun, etc... Your criticizing something your going to buy, therefore stop the contradiction. In Fort Hood a woman displayed that they can take action and kick ass with no WAR experience. Sit back and let Anya show you how it's done.

This aint WW2 dude, this is the 21st century, sorry to break it to ya, but women are serving in the military right now. Yes, it is fact that the average women is less physicly fit than the average man, but that doesn't mean that there arnt women out there who are more physicly fit than men.

Well I've heard it's "confirmed" there's a Sam Byrne in Gears 3, and the blonde girl doesn't quite look like Anya, so maybe it's Sam. And Bernadette Mataki is "Bernie." Sam Byrne is not. So there should be 3 girls in the game but Bernie probably won't be seen in a combat role due to the 3rd book (not saying more about that so I won't spoil anything hopefully), and also it's a 50/50 shot with Anya. Sam is definitely in a combat role though so I think it's her. Also the "rape camps" aren't mentioned in any of the games so not everyone considers them "core canon" and they don't have to affect your opinion of the Gears universe people. It's your choice if they do or don't. They also aren't in the books so I'm ignoring them unless they're mentioned in Gears 3. ^.^

Besides, war is horrible and no one is truly psychologically prepared.

OMG, I have to chime in! If you grew up female in the 60's, you were told that women were not psychologically adapted to be astronauts, athletes, engineers, lawyers, judges, cops, firefighters, surgeons (being a doctor was OK if you were a pediatrician). Women were certainly not suitable to be heads of state - we don't want a WOMAN sitting with her finger on the button - heaven forbid! Especially if it is her "time of the month"! (Regardless of what one thinks of her political philosophy, Margaret Thatcher eliminated all doubt about women being capable to run the world). For all of the troglodytes who insist that women are emotionally inferior to men, science has proven the only real difference between women and men is physical strength. Ironically, the "weaker" sex is just that - physically weaker; but technology is negating the need for brute strength. Making decisions based on emotion is a training issue, NOT a biological one. (Consider the number of men who stalk their ex wives and girlfriends, obsessed to the point of killing. Now argue that women are the emotional ones). Women WILL see combat eventually; they will fly as combat pilots initially. To Sean who said: "THIS is a fucking fact that you can't dispute. THEY ARE NOT MADE TO BE SOLDIERS." You are right - it is pretty difficult to argue with a bigot. Or to dispute sexism since it is not based in reality. Your reasoning is no more sound  than those who argued that blacks were not made to be officers. Or that gays could not serve honorably. The bottom line, however, is that just bc you say it doesn't make it so. "(Y)ou all bought into feminist propaganda that is shoved down our throats by the liberal media." Turn off Fox, Sean, step out of your man-cave and maybe read a BOOK... There is a thing called a LIBRARY where you can have access to real facts. Here are a few that even one such as yourself cannot dispute:  This is a video game, not life. Even if it were true that women were not suitable to be soldiers, there is no reason why they are not suitable to play a game, which is fantasy. The only thing that game producers care about is selling their product. ME/ME2 included the ability to play Shepherd as a female or male. Last I heard, the only real complaint about ME is that it will not have a ME4! ME is a RAGING success. The fact that the lead character can be female demonstrates that gender is a non-issue. All of the whining is for naught. A few final facts: You guys have gotten awfully "emotional" about a non-issue. As ever, there will always be men who are threatened by powerful women. Science has shown us that women have the SMARTS to be anything they want to be. Modern day combat requires smarts, not muscle. That is a FACT that you and your cavebuddies will have to wrap your skulls around.

None of you keyboard warriors know what real warfare is all about. It's not fun, and it's not exciting. It isn't Hollywood, and it certainly isn't a video game. About ninety-nine percent of actual modern warfare consists of:

    1) Mind-numbing grunt work. Do you think supply trucks load themselves? How do the missiles get onto a fighter jet's wing pylons? Who cooks and cleans?

    2) Endless treks through one barren waste after another, hoping that you don't get ambushed.

    3) Sitting around sweating your fucking ass off in full body armor, wondering when the next wave of mortar rounds is going to hit, or if your best buddy is going to get blown up by a roadside bomb while on patrol.

    4) Trying to stabilize a patient that is missing half of his head.

    5) Oh, look. A five-year-old girl's corpse, riddled with shrapnel. Looks like her eyeball's hanging out of its socket. Brilliant. Was that our fire that did that, or theirs? You don't know. You've stopped caring, actually.

    6) Seeing some muzzle flashes a few hundred yards away. Shooting back and hitting nothing even after expending over a hundred rounds. Call in an airstrike. Watch the fireworks. Rinse, repeat until your Humvee gets blown up by an IED and you're in a medevac C-130. Maybe you can hang out with the cockroaches at Walter Reed. Teach them some tricks.

    7) Pulling silly pranks on each other to ease the boredom and oppressive monotony of it all.

    8) Gun jams in a firefight. Re-seat the magazine, cycle the action, pull the trigger. Still not working. Take the magazine out. Pull the charging handle and try to shake out any brass that might be stuck in the chamber. Oops, looks like it's lodged in there tight. Won't feed another round, won't extract the spent cartridge case even though you've pulled the charging handle a billion times. Going to need to take it apart or ram it out with a cleaning rod or something. There are still rounds hitting the berm right in front of you, and your gun is non-functional. Aren't you glad you're wearing desert camo to cover up the poop stains? Oh, that's right. You're actually wearing that greyish ACU digital shit that doesn't work. Everyone's going to see it when you lose the contents of your bowels.

    9) All your equipment was made by the lowest bidder. Literally.

    10) Oh no, another one of the little local rugrats wants some of your [put essential supplies here]. What do you do?

It's not fun. It's not cool. It's extremely banal.

Furthermore, you people rambling on about how women are physically incapable of taking part in war need to read up on your history. What about female Soviet snipers, or British SOE agents, or pilots? Are you going to just pretend they never existed? That their service meant nothing? Shame on you.

Lyudmila Pavlichenko killed over 300 Nazis with her bolt-action rifle. Nancy Wake - a New Zealander who led a massive French resistance group - strangled an SS sentry to death with her bare hands, and biked three hundred freakin' miles nonstop to replace radio codes that had been compromised in a raid. If you think women can't fight in wars or lack the physical or mental mettle for it, then fuck you. You're wrong.

That said, there are a number of reasons why women aren't in front-line combat positions today:

    1) Nine out of ten times, a man will risk his life unnecessarily to save a female squad member if he sees her take a bullet. In other words, it's the GUYS who get emotional when they see women hurt or dying.

    2) Supply chain/logistics issues. Requires special hygiene products. Difficult to standardize one-size-fits-all gear that will fit both sexes comfortably. Added expenses involved.

    3) Lower upper body strength on average. Just because women are weaker on average, however, you shouldn't take that to mean that they are incapable of becoming any stronger than they are by default. Virtually any woman in good health can, with sufficient training, lift you or I above their head with alarming ease. I'm 220 pounds of solid muscle, so that's saying something. Individual members of both sexes are easily capable of surpassing a threshold where their strength exceeds that of 99% of the rest of the world's population. It doesn't take very much effort to be part of that top seventy million or so.

    4) Increased chance of physical and/or sexual abuse, by both friend and foe. I think a lot of folks out there haven't really got the memo; apparently, some people are still under the delusion that humans are in some special class all our own, separate and distinct from other animals due to our highly sophisticated civilization. No. We're creepy, hairless apes that walk on two legs. Base aggression and hormone-driven psychosis is our calling card, and governments exist only to regulate the inevitable side effects of this inconvenient truth. It is essential to factor this little detail into your overall picture of human social patterns. Why, war itself is merely an artifact of this phenomenon.

    5) Possibility of evading combat duty by getting pregnant, be it intentionally or... unintentionally.

In the end, it mostly boils down to money. It is simply more cost-effective to field male soldiers, and you know how the GAO is about saving the taxpayers some bread.

Quite frankly, I can't see why anyone - male or female - would want to partake in war. It's not a game. It's not a test of one's manhood. It's just plain shit, and it's not worth anyone's time. Not mine, not yours, and certainly not theirs. Women, I mean.
