Sweet Sue’s bread pudding

Comfort on a plate
By MARLISSA BRIGGETT  |  October 24, 2006

Bread pudding has always seemed to me as appetizing as fruit cake: like, not at all. But the next time you’re in Arlington, head to Sweet Sue’s Bakery & Café and prepare yourself for a revelation. Baking her leftover cinnamon buns with a little brown sugar, vanilla, and cream, Susan Watts creates a masterpiece. To begin with, the scent of cinnamon wafting through the air will cast doubt on any preconceived notions about bread pudding. But you know what they say: the proof is in the pudding. So go ahead and order a serving. Bring a friend, because the generous portions beg for multiple spoons. Gooey, sweet, and warm, the melted brown sugar tastes like caramel and the pieces of cinnamon bun lend scrumptious texture. On any day of the week, it’ll evoke the decadent sense of lazy Sunday mornings spent reading the paper beside a plate of syrupy, homemade French toast. There’s no better treat on a chilly fall day.

Available for $3.75 at Sweet Sue’s Bakery & Café, 795 Mass Ave, Arlington | 781.646.1118
