In case it wasn't clear already, Steve Earle idolizes Townes Van Zandt, the Texas singer-songwriter who died in 1997 after decades of soul-shaking music and life-obliterating demons. Earle has covered some of Van Zandt's songs before; he even named his kid (himself now a singer-songwriter) Justin Townes Earle.
So this 15-track tribute has "What took you so long" written all over it, but at the same time it feels like the record Steve Earle needed to make right now, his finely focused yang to the yin of 2007's ambitious, New York–centric
Washington Square Serenade.
At that, he recorded most of the basic acoustic tracks in his Greenwich Village apartment before heading to Nashville for augmentation.
"Colorado Girl" and "Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold" remain unadorned: voice, guitar, and a story. Most of the others are only slightly less spartan: unobtrusive bass and drums ("Poncho and Lefty"); wife Allison Moorer singing background ("Loretta," "To Live Is To Fly"); bluegrass quartet (on the three additional tracks cut on Music Row). "Lungs" is another story: spooky no-frills blues unexpectedly intersected by Tom Morello's harrowing electric guitar.
Throughout,
Townes
does what a tribute album should do: Earle evokes the essence of the honoree without giving up a smidgen of his own individuality.

Steve Earle
This is Steve Earle’s big hug to his new home town, New York City, and his new wife (his seventh), country singer Allison Moorer.
Forever young
When I first get Joan Baez on the phone, my burning question is what she thinks of the upcoming presidential election.
The Horrors | Primary Colours
The new Horrors long-player is a throwback of some kind, but to what?
The Intelligence | Fake Surfers
With more and more blasted lo-fi nerd bait polluting the record bins and stolen-music blogs these days, it's gotten increasingly difficult to sort out the real deal from the hangers-on.
Levon Helm | Electric Dirt
Helm's 2007 Dirt Farmer won the Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy for its acoustic arrangements of songs plucked from the Delta soil of the Band drummer and singer's rural Arkansas youth.
Street Sweeper Social Club | Street Sweeper Social Club
Rap-rock group Street Sweeper Social Club have been hyped as a supergroup.

The Thriller is gone
With the release of Bad (Epic), Michael Jackson ends a recording hiatus of nearly five years. He could have stayed away for 10 years and still not have escaped the shadow of Thriller , the biggest-selling album of all time.
Future of the Left | Travels With Myself and Another
There's a fine line between stupid and clever, as Spinal Tap once quipped, and don't these Future of the Left guys just know it.
Yacht | See Mystery Lights
One reason DFA is the label of records people want at their party is because the folks there have a sense of humor — be it James Murphy's prolonged deadpan hipster-papa martyrdom, the Juan Maclean's unconcealed boner for shitty piano pre-sets, or the smile-while-you-dance extravagance of Hercules and Love Affair.

| March 17, 2011
The new New York Dolls have now been around longer - and released more albums (three) - than the old New York Dolls, and they're commemorating that new longevity by letting go of any compulsion they may have still harbored to honor their designation as "punk-rock progenitors."
