Wild, Wild West

Delonte West tries out for the Washington Bullets. Plus, SUNY-Binghamton is at it again.

Former Celtic Delonte West has long been known as a clutch shooter, but he's apparently taking that reputation a little too literally.

West has been arrested on weapons charges. It seems he was zooming around on a Can-Am Spider motorcycle north of the Capital Beltway near his hometown of Washington, DC, when he cut off a cop. The officer pulled him over and subsequently discovered one handgun in West's pocket, another strapped to his pant leg, and a shotgun in a guitar case he was carrying over his shoulder.

This scene raises all sorts of questions, not the least of which being: what the hell is Delonte West doing riding around on a motorcycle with a shotgun? Where could he possibly have been going, and why would he need the shotgun? Is he auditioning for a Rutger Hauer movie or something?

West, who last year disappeared for a while amid reports of depression and mood disorder, was carrying a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Ruger .357 magnum handgun, and a Remington 870 shotgun, and was hit with speeding and weapons charges. He's said in the past that his moods fluctuate the most wildly when he's feeling good. We'll see what comes out of this, but the positive spin here is that at least his mood swings should be under control soon! Thirty-seven points for driving around like Mad Max.

Definitely Mayben?
Hoop players like Emanuel "Tiki" Mayben don't normally end up at schools like the State University of New York at Binghamton. Mayben, a former high-school phenom from Troy, New York, was recruited to play for Syracuse, but ended up at SUNY because of . . . well, troubles. A problem with grades prevented him from playing for the Orange, so Mayben transferred to UMass, where he played for a year before moving on, first to Hudson Valley Community College and, finally, to Binghamton. It looked like he was destined to fade into obscurity, but then he did something no one had ever done before — he led Binghamton's b-ball squad to an NCAA tournament bid last year.

Things seemed to be looking up for the 6-3 point guard, but this past week, he was arrested by Troy police for dealing cocaine. Apparently, Mayben had been under investigation for some time, because police reportedly observed him selling coke on two separate occasions way back on June 29. And he didn't help matters by having 3.4 grams of the stuff on him at the time of the bust. Cops ended up charging him with two counts of third-degree sale of a controlled substance — a Class-B felony — plus two additional counts of possession in the third and fifth degrees.

Mayben made bail and his attorney, Greg Cholakis, was cheery for reporters who came to watch his hearing. "He's got a class at five o'clock tomorrow," Cholakis said outside the courtroom Thursday. "He's going to be out and back to school." School maybe, but hoops? Nope. Binghamton's AD permanently dismissed Mayben from the team on Friday.
