Review: Paranormal Activity 3

Little to offer
By ANN LEWINSON  |  October 25, 2011

"Wait, why are you filming this?" asks a little girl (Jessica Tyler Brown) having tea with her Teddy Ruxpin and her invisible friend, Toby. It's a question you'll be asking as well in this sequel in a series of diminishing returns. This time it's 1988, when the sisters of the first two movies were girls and their mother (Lauren Bittner) had a boyfriend (Christopher Nicholas Smith) who worked as a wedding videographer. When things start going bump in the night, he sets up cameras, and to the first film's DV and the second's surveillance video, directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) have added a camcorder mounted on the base of a fan, which pans from the living room to the kitchen. Aside from the fan-cam, 3 has little to offer: the camera is shakier and 2's ludicrous backstory is continued. Forget demons: as we saw in 1, there's nothing scarier than your partner standing next to your bed for hours.
