Plus, even more to do in Pawtucket
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  September 6, 2011

Report to Machines with Magnets and revel in the loudness on FRIDAY (the 9th) with San Fran's OXBOW (their only New England appearance), as well as local guests TINSEL TEETH and WHORE PAINT; a well-spent $10 cover, call 401.475.2655. Also on Friday, DOPAPOD and SAUCE (led by singer Chelsy Lau) visit the Spot Underground (401.383.7133); and one of the best live bands in RI, THE DIEPODS, play a hometown set at Billy Goode's in Newport (401.848.5013). Start your SATURDAY (the 10th) at the Li'l Rhody RibFest at Slater Park. The BBQ throwdown will feature live performances from the DUKE ROBILLARD BAND (celebrating their new release, Low Down & Tore Up), the TIM TAYLOR BLUES BAND, FOREVER YOUNG, and many more; admission is $10 (kids under 13 free), call 401.724.5200 or visit pawtucketartsfestival.org for details. One year in the books (already?!) for our friends at the Met, and they've lined up quite the birthday bash weekend: on Friday it's THE AGENTS and THE RAVERS, and on Saturday, YO LA TENGO finally return to RI ("Autumn Sweater," please); call 401.729.1005 for info on both shows. On SUNDAY (the 11th), check out punk-ska cats OC45 with indie-folk locals PLESIOSAUR at AS220, dial 401.831.9327. TUESDAY (the 13th) marks the kickoff of "THE BRIDGE" at PVD Social Club (formerly Jerky's), a new weekly hip-hop open mic/local showcase hosted by CR THE BEAST and 2011 Best Music Poll rap champ CHACHI CARVALHO, along with local wordsmith phenoms like JAHPAN and many more. Open mic starts at 10 pm, so get there early for signups (18+), call 401.454.7177. Ahead to next THURSDAY (the 15th), catch acclaimed Boston quartet THE WANDAS at Newport Blues Cafe ($5 cover, 401.846.5510). The 2010 'BRU Rock Hunt victors scored some nice press from USA Today and Guitar World magazine, which has already listed their self-titled disc as one of the 50 Best Albums of 2011 (they must have have really early deadlines at GW).
