Conventional wisdom would have this Montreal-based fivesome already enjoying the fruits of being this year’s new big Canadian export, what with their Arcade Fire elbow rubbing and a stint opening for Metric in the States last fall. And the band’s debut for Islands’ new Equator imprint is right up Montreal’s pop alley, with its spastic, tightly wound post-punk pop punctuated by the shrill neo-new-wave yelps of Mark Kupfert and Richard Yanofsky. Yet as relentlessly quirky as the Lovely Feathers seem determined to be, they squeeze an excess of hooks into
Hind Hind Legs
. The dizzying lead track, “Pope John Paul,” changes pace five times in the span of four minutes; the lilting “Wrong Choice” relies on a skewed Weezer-esque pop sensibility; the catchy, up-tempo “In the Valley” peaks with a slippery Moog breakdown. All the eccentricities do grow wearisome, yet the relatively straightforward “Mildly Decorated” reminds you that the Feathers are capable of appreciating giddy pop music for what it is.

Freaks and frauds
Freaks you expect, but frauds and hucksters also populate the loosely defined subculture known as the underground.
The low end
The British rave revolution of the late ’80s/early ’90s is accurately viewed as the source of the ever increasing number of dance genres in the UK.
Honeydripper
John Sayles’s first clunker is a threadbare yarn about the emergence of rock and roll that substitutes clichés for character development.
Brooklyn calling
Below are new sounds from four very different Brooklyn acts.
Ben Lee
Ben Lee’s never made any secret of his fondness for the warm and fuzzy side of Evan Dando’s Lemonheads pop.
Bettye’s business
The battles of a blues belter
Sexual Halen
Good news from the literary delivery room: the ignoble genre of rock biography has just given birth to its first genuine comedy.
Travis
Travis defy the very concept of surprise; their tasteful, tuneful guitar pop is about comfort and safety and always knowing what’s happening next.
Dolores O’Riordan
Dolores O’Riordan won a place in alt-rock history for her yodel-streaked vocal stylings, not her penetrating insights.
Benni Hemm Hemm
The language of twee-dom knows no borders.
Erasure
Heck, they could have made it on Mars.
