PRODIGAL SONS: Smoke or Fire returns to Boston from Richmond, VA.

MISSION OF BURMA, who’ve sold about 20,000 copies of their latest Matador CD, The Obliterati, begin a seven-date West Coast swing this week. Hopes? “What I’d like to see,” says drummer Peter Prescott, “is what I saw on the other shows we did after the record came out, which is people actually excited and screaming along to our new songs. There’s still a gasp or too when ‘Academy’ or ‘Revolver’ comes up, but to see people mouthing along to new songs is the real turn-on. We’ve been kind of shocked.”

Cabaret/Gypsy-music group BEAT CIRCUS have finished their second CD with producer Martin Bisi (Dresden Dolls, Foetus). And the punk/Americana band SMOKE OR FIRE are working on their second effort (due in February) and are preparing to head to the Windy City to record at Atlas Studio with Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Rise Against). Formerly known as Jericho, Smoke or Fire moved to Richmond, Virginia, because of the high cost of Hub living, but now that rents have dropped, they’re back. They also have a new man behind the drum kit: Dave Atchison.
