Notes on Frank Smith and the Rudds

Gremlins got into the copy last week and the result wound up confusing the Providence-based DAUGHTERS mentioned in last week’s column with the North Shore-based Daughters who were Johnny Thunders’ backing band for a time in the ’80s. The new Daughters — a loud art-metal group — played the Middle East last month (not Great Scott, as I said) and don’t currently have any local dates scheduled. Apologies all ’round.On to the new . . . at one point, Boston’s LOT SIX had their 2004 CD Major Fables named a Top 10 “College Album” by Rolling Stone. And the Lot Six spinoff FRANK SMITH, a dark alt-country collective formed by drummer Aaron Sinclair, were named “one of the 10 local bands you need to see” last month in The Phoenix. You can take our advice next Friday, September 29, when Frank Smith headline T.T. the Bear’s NEMO showcase. And you can see the Lot Six one last time: though they’ve announced their break-up, the eclectic band will go out with a bang November 16 at the Middle East downstairs, with support from MITTENS, HEADBAND, AGE RINGS, and more. The Lot Six’s music does go all over the map, but I like the way they sum up their influences on their MySpace page: “lame shit.”
Another local fave, the RUDDS (Brett Rosenberg’s other band), have been busy beavers. After a recent NYC show, they opened for Flaming Lips here (a prize in a First Act Guitars contest that also netted them free guitars), and on September 23 they’ll assume their alter ego as BEBE BUELL’s backing band up north at the Big Easy, in Bebe’s backyard of Portland. They also have a NEMO gig at Johnny D’s on September 30 and a show booked for October 28 — Halloween Saturday — at T.T. the Bear’s Place. According to bassist Tony Goddess, the T.T.’s show “will involve moustaches.” A little digging has revealed that they plan to play one set of their own songs and one set as a Hall and Oates cover band. The SILVER LINING will join the bill to play a set of Who tunes.
