“The Balearic Sound of Ibiza,” say the intro notes to the latest three-CD compilation from the prolific and inspired Defected production team. Devoted entirely to long-time Ibiza favorites, as selected by famed Ibiza DJ Pippi, the third CD includes “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide,” De Melero’s “1,2,3,4,” a drag-queen-ish version of James Brown’s “Sex Machine,” René et Gaston’s “Vallée de larmes,” Black Box’s 1990 hit “Fantasy,” and much more. No surprise that these hits tend to overwhelm the other two CDs, which are continuous mixes of garage, Eurohaus, and jazzy, Miguel Migs–style house, all of them very popular in Ibiza discos. Those looking for big noise, high-volume trance, and similarly maximum-intensity dance music will not find it here; the music lopes along with a moderate amount of orchestration, atmospherics, piano solos, and vocal reveries — lullaby rather than lust. Favorite tracks: Willie Bobo’s classic “Always There,” Ultra Nate’s “How Long,” Peven Everett’s cute “Just a Girl,” and three Brazilian-style numbers: Siji’s “Iranajo,” Jansa y Juju’s “Mainstreet,” and DJ Meme’s “Patolada.”

House heads
The lounge at 33 Restaurant & Lounge on Stanhope Street in the Back Bay may just have Boston’s tiniest dance floor. The upstairs restaurant isn’t much bigger.
Dead, or immortal?
When Chuck D challenges the status quo, a bunch of fortysomethings nod their heads, but Nas can put the young rappers on the defensive.
Close readings
The JCA has been at it since 1985, a collective of musicians who are primarily composers rather than players, in need of an outlet to hear their pieces.
The A list
Overall, a great list; impossible to do and make everyone happy.
Dreamgirls
The chorus has been singing for months now: Bill Condon’s can’t-miss adaptation of Tom Eyen & Henry Krieger’s 25-year-old Broadway musical is roaring into theaters to save a lackluster fall. Watch the trailer for Dreamgirls (QuickTime)
Club man
Already established as one of the world’s most respected house DJs, Roger Sanchez is now shaping his work for radio.
House at home
If you’re a producer of house music and you’re looking for a label, you might well submit your tracks to Escuro Records.
Babel rousers
It’s not often that I feel this way, but this year I’m kind of proud of my profession.
High-voltage humans
No musical movement, not even CBGB’s-era first-wave punk, captured the push-and-pull of love/hate about modern city living like No Wave did.
Flashbacks: September 1, 2006
These selections, culled from our back files, were compiled by Ian Sands and Paul Babin.
The Big Hurt: Marley pimped, Miley sorry, Kanye secure
This goes to print a week after I write it because of the damnable pre-Web technology of the printed page, but I swear to God that I was the first son of a bitch to think of it: Jackson Browne, James Brown, Bobby Brown, Chris Brown .
