Stars
Like MF Doom before him, Sean Price has switched personae, reconfigured his style, and given his underground hip-hop career a second life in recent years. Price originally recorded under the name Ruck as one half of Heltah Skeltah, but reverting back to his given name has ushered in a golden age for the New York MC.
Monkey Barz
(2005) was a hardcore East Coast disc: smooth, funky beats, hard-hitting rhymes, and little else to get in the way.
Jesus Price Supastar
is more of the same, but Price has stepped up his lyrics game with the likes of “Kneel down kiss the ring/R. Kelly your verse when I piss on your 16.” His performance is bolstered by tight production, half of which comes from Justus League superproducers Khrysis and 9th Wonder on gritty no-chaser tracks like “King Kong” and “Hearing Aid.” An all-around improvement on a solid debut, and proof that Price is back for more than just a visit.

Legends of Bucktown
Despite his notorious blunt-scented halitosis, Sean Price feels terrific these days.
Label makers
To keep tabs on how Duck Down maintains its hardcore tradition despite also expanding with MTV-friendly acts like Kidz in the Hall, you need look no farther than Ruste Juxx and Marco Polo.
Akrobatik
One of the hallmarks of Akrobatik’s style has always been his sincerity.
Ghost world
“For those who don't know me, I’m known for using soul music,” Ghostface proclaimed. “I get a lot of pussy for it too.”
The Roots
Philadelphia’s the Roots first became known as hip-hop’s consummate contrarians, playing jazzy grooves on live instruments (no samples allowed) and waxing poetic about their distaste for the commercial mainstream.
Open M.I.C.
Boston MCs are banding together under the banner of the Mass. Industry Committee.
Lil Wayne
All rappers ride on the claim that they’re the best, but on III Wayne makes his case.
Keelay & Zaire | Ridin' High
Keelay and Zaire's tracks bounce lovelier than Joe Budden's girlfriend on that trampoline.
Scrunk happens
According to AbsolutePunk's Jason Tate, brokeNCYDE "epitomize everything that music (and human beings) should not be."
9th Wonder and Buckshot
Although the term is often bandied about, 9th Wonder has become a true super-producer in recent years.
After-party
Don’t be surprised if you hear yourself shouting, “Rewind Selektah!”
