Jesus Price Supastar | Duckdown

Like MF Doom before him, Sean Price has switched personae, reconfigured his style, and given his underground hip-hop career a second life in recent years. Price originally recorded under the name Ruck as one half of Heltah Skeltah, but reverting back to his given name has ushered in a golden age for the New York MC. Monkey Barz (2005) was a hardcore East Coast disc: smooth, funky beats, hard-hitting rhymes, and little else to get in the way. Jesus Price Supastar is more of the same, but Price has stepped up his lyrics game with the likes of “Kneel down kiss the ring/R. Kelly your verse when I piss on your 16.” His performance is bolstered by tight production, half of which comes from Justus League superproducers Khrysis and 9th Wonder on gritty no-chaser tracks like “King Kong” and “Hearing Aid.” An all-around improvement on a solid debut, and proof that Price is back for more than just a visit.
