Notes on the new destination for those mourning the loss of Man Ray

Everyone hates to see a sad, homeless goth kid. But that’s what it must have looked like in Central Square in July 2005 when Man Ray closed its doors. After nearly 20 years, the outré mainstay was demolished to make way for condos. ELONI FELICIANO, who’d been promoting a night at Man Ray called “XMORTIS,” simply took her idea across the street to T.T. the Bear’s booker RANDI MILLMAN. Feliciano thought T.T.’s might be a temporary home, but the event, with Chris Ewan on the turntables, has been going strong the second Friday of each month. “We love the goth nights,” Millman says. “It’s a nice change from our usual fare.” Feliciano says that though it’s a similar show, “the focus has changed because the place is smaller. We have more guest DJs; people are less interested in live performances.” Each show also has a theme: “Arabian Midnights,” “Old Skool,” “Fashion Victims”; this Friday it’s “Goth Pop.” DJ Addam Bomb, from out Northampton way, will join the dark celebration.Speaking of the dark side: the Salem label Deathwish Inc. reports two bands finishing up CDs in the area and two about to start out of state. SHIPWRECK are wrapping up The Abyss at Getaway Group in Wakefield with Jay Maas; 108 are near completion of their first DW disc with Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studios in Salem. Further from home, LIFE LONG TRAGEDY are headed out to Grizzly Studios in Petaluma, California, next month, and Sacramento’s KILLING THE DREAM will do their sophomore DW disc at Magpie Cage in Baltimore with J. Robbins in May. . . . And a sad note: after a great disc on the local Fenway label, READ YELLOW have called it quits. They’ll play their final local show on March 22, upstairs at the Middle East.
