With four solo albums to his name and no more than a meager reputation, you’d expect former Hot Boy Lil’ Wayne to have gotten tired by the time he set out to record
Tha Carter, Vol. 2
. Instead he comes at it hungry, not thirsty, throwing his punch lines like punches and propping his swagger up on a deep, beefy rumble. He’s taken the long road to this album, and as he says in “Best Rapper Alive,” this disc is a victory lap: “I ain’t even out of breath/The motherfucking best yet/Sorry for cussing.” Sometimes he’s so into it that it’s creepy (“Smell me, girl/I smell like money”), but most of the time it’s easy just to take the passenger seat and not worry about where he’s driving. Wayne’s “yep” is about as good as Jeezy’s “yeeaaaah,” and his laugh splits the difference between a Jadakiss cackle and a Jay-Z chuckle. He drives slow the entire way through
Tha Carter, Vol. 2
, and with such infectious enthusiasm, it comes across like a triumphant debut.

The Big Hurt: Playing with fire
Milli-selling rapgoblin Lil Wayne probably didn’t worry too much about borrowing the Rolling Stones’ “Play with Fire” for the hook of his track “Playing with Fire.”
David Banner
It would be a stronger statement if it weren’t for the conflicting cornerstones of conscientious-rapper soapboxing and standard-issue gangsta themes he’s laid at its foundation.
Lil Wayne
All rappers ride on the claim that they’re the best, but on III Wayne makes his case.
35. Lil Wayne
He may be the best rapper alive, but Lil Wayne’s starting to look like an extra from the “Thriller” video. And now, on the heels of his awful “Let It Rock” collabo with emo wannabe Kevin Rudolf, the erratic N’awlins spitter is threatening to morph into a guitar hero — even though his ill-fated SNL foray into shredding was hailed in the blogosphere as the worst solo, ever.

Our dream of a post-racial America moved one space closer to "king me" on the checkerboard of terrible metaphors this week
Lil Wayne’s world
On his mixtapes, Wayne is the most playful, experimental artist in mainstream hip-hop
The Big Hurt: Weezy goes free, Miley turns bitter, Martin still lame
The good news: the 2006 drug charges against Lil Wayne have been dropped after a judge ruled that the search leading to his arrest wasn't proper.
Jay Reatard | Watch Me Fall
Jay Reatard is the Lil Wayne of the Memphis garage-rock scene.

More evidence of the sickening barbarity of America’s penal institutions: Lil Wayne is being hassled because officers found headphones and the charger for an MP3 player in his cell.
