Stars
This set by influential French-born, Miami-based DJ Gervais lives up to its title, showcasing the soft sounds, lilting rhythms, and bright textures that distinguish Miami house from the bluesier and funkier styles prevalent in other major house cities. The 12 tracks include two of Gervais’s own, both of them well-known hits: Alcatraz’s “Give Me Luv,” an all-time (1995) Ibiza favorite, and Holmes Ives and Avalon Frost’s “8 Letters.” There are also two Eddie Amador songs, the tipsy-voiced “6 AM” and the anthemic “House Music,” which warns that “not everybody understands house music.” Some understanding of the soul, body, and spiritual attributes that Amador is asking dancers to listen for might be gleaned from the lesser-known tracks in Gervais’s set, especially the later ones, in which the rhythm gets on down and feels almost dirty: Julie Dennis’s blissed-out “Sugar (Sweet Thing),” Danny Rampling’s electro-spiritual “Strobe Light,” DJ Remy and Roland Klinkenberg’s even more bountiful “Detroit Track,” and Chab’s smudgy techno beats in “The Dub Sessions,” which closes out the CD on a fierce, even funky stride.

Party pros
Weekend Warriors, or WKND WRYRZ, is the Sunday-night lounge party at ZuZu in Central Square.
The Field
Not since Akufen’s “My Way” has an album of microsamples achieved the status of high art.
James Holden
In the compartmentalized dance community, James Holden’s debut full-length is a surprising departure from the progressive house that’s given him a following.
Tunnels
Whether Tunnels will surge to the top of the current prog-rock/fusion renaissance remains to be seen, but the late-’90s addition of the legendary British bassist Percy Jones hasn’t hurt their standing.
Potvin's luck
DJ Michael Potvin is many things to many people.
Suzanne Palmer
One of house music’s emblematic voices, Palmer at last gets her debut CD, and it’s a good one.
Chance and dance
For the past three years, one of the prime centers for experimental, improvised, and new music and jazz in Boston has been the Open Sound series in Somerville.
Nervous energy
“If I actually stopped to think about what’s going on, I’d probably shit myself,” says James Rushent, singer/bassist for UK electro-rock quartet Does It Offend You, Yeah?
Matias Aguayo | Ay Ay Ay
You know the old saying: you can lead a horse to dance music, but you can’t make it sign up for a Beatport account.
DJ Honey Dijon at Rise
For house music, you can’t get much more authentic than DJ Honey Dijon.
DJ Food and DK
You’d be hard-pressed to find such proficient and seemingly effortless mixing.
