Portland scene report: April 11, 2008

Sibilance starts now

There’s a new supergroup in town and they’re wasting zero time in releasing their debut disc. Cyclops, which is more mellow than that name might imply, features Neil Collins (Twisted Roots, Lincolnville, Eldemur Krimm), Todd Dadaleares(MeRCy, smacdada), Jason Stewart (Twitchboy, 6gig, Sidecar Radio), and Joe Thomas (Soul Synergy). Their first show, April 18 at Empire, doubles as a CD-release for the 10-song Doppelganger, recorded at Dadaleares’s Teknosis studio. This is an important new band, so take note.

Dead End Armory released an eight-song maxi-EP on Pea Pod Recordings March 25. Dubbed “Texas-style indie rock and New England wintercore,” color us intrigued. We’re sure Pfeifle’s working on a review sometime soon.

Hiss and Chambers will debut j.hjort, who’s got a history as a rocker despite his current electronic leanings, as their new guitarist, April 11 at the Empire.

Alt-country rockers the Molenes, who hail from Portsmouth, are ready to release their sophomore disc, Songs of Sin and Redemption, on May 6. Look for a release show here in Portland sometime in late May or early June.

Remember the Project, the kids who won the Reindeer Rock-Off in 2007? Well, now they’re called Faster! Faster! and they’ve just finished an EP with Jim Begley at the Studio. With three years of playing together, they’re a tight punk-pop outfit that know how to put a song together. Be on the lookout for a release before summer starts in earnest.

Sorry to be flogging the hell out of the Empire, but you need to get up there April 19, as well, to see theComing Grass, who’ll be playing out for the first time in three years. They’re a bit reconstituted, with Sara Cox taking a pass on this one, and long-timers Nate Schrock (guitar and vocals) and Steve Jones (guitar and vocals) being joined by Eric Glockler on bass (Strangefolk) and old friend Chicky Stoltz (Munjoy Hill Society, etc.) on drums.
