Stars
There was a time when the saxophone was the King of Rock; now its only place outside of jazz is with the
Muppet Show
house band. But there are exceptions to every rule, and Sweden's Love is All are that. Here they slam out of the gate with a sax-driven dance anthem that’s more Contortions than Comets
.
The second track, “Spinning and Scratching,” takes a break from the brashness long enough to introduce a chorus of wordless harmonies that tail the melody for the duration of the song. So much vamping along to dance beats would grow tiresome if the band didn’t sound like a claustrophobic girl group so often. “Turn the TV Off” is a shambling little ’60s-influenced party that lasts less than two minutes but packs some serious bass-line boogie.
9 Times That Same Song
is both retro and current yet cows down to neither.

For love or money
You suffered the high-school advisor, her dizzying floral-print dresses, her tightly-wound chignon, and, in your catatonic, college-search state, heard her statistics-riddled drone.
Everyday use
Two new exhibits take design — the familiar background of our daily lives — and give it immediacy in a gallery setting.
IndieArts' sensory overload
If Providence is to become the "Creative Capital" of Mayor Cicilline's latest marketing campaign, it will take more than a few orange P's affixed to politicians' lapels and plastered on signs about town.
Deception
Director Marcel Langenegger has a way with a nocturnal urban landscape, but his feature debut goes splat on the pavement.
Cheap thrills
Summertime inevitably raises the question: what are we going to do with our crazy, hot selves? Summer Guide 2006: Cheap thrills from Bar Harbor to New Haven.
Academic (im)prints
The Bowdoin Alumni Printmaking Exhibition at ICON Contemporary Art in Brunswick is the perfect primer for the array of talent emerging from the Bowdoin College campus.
In the mind of the beholder
Groundbreaking takes on new meaning when it’s applied to the work of Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler, the subjects of an important new show at MIT’s List Center.
Odd and vulnerable
The women in Amy Cutler’s drawings and paintings are odd and vulnerable but sometimes a formidable lot.
Geeky gifts 101
“Smelly Yankee Candle for Grandma? Check. Tie for Dad? Got it. Toy dump truck for Tommy? Yup. Man, this holiday shopping stuff is easy. Now, who’s next? . . . Um. . . Hmmm.”
Best buildings
Most travel guides are little more than lists of colorless places in which to waste your money and sanitized tourist traps in which to waste your time.
Classing up the joint
A substantial portion of the Paradise's clientele Friday evening wouldn't have looked out of place at a fancy dinner party. Thanks to the World/Inferno Friendship Society, punk rock and snazzy fashion sense are no longer mutually exclusive.
