Nights in Rodanthe

Weepy, made-for-TV material

Diane Lane has become typecast as the older, disenfranchised woman who runs away to find solace but instead rediscovers romance, or at least sex. Such was the case with Under the Tuscan Sun, and so is it here, where Lane’s Adrienne escapes a philandering husband and a combative daughter by temping as the keeper of a quaint inn situated on a North Carolina barrier island. Tempests abound, the trouble back home being echoed by the hurricane about to obliterate the small coastal town even as it churns up the romantic tensions that develop when Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere) checks in. Paul has his own problems, and in the face of the storm, he and Adrienne confront their pasts and try to move forward. The actors, who’ve been paired before (Unfaithful), have chemistry, and they give their characters complexity beyond the made-for-TV direction by George C. Wolfe and the weepy material adapted from the Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook) novel. 97 minutes | Boston Common + Fenway + Fresh Pond + Chestnut Hill + Suburbs

There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.

If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
