Predictability ensues. Hilarity doesn’t.

How many awful films must audiences sit through before producers realize that Dane Cook is not a romantic lead? Would anyone who saw last year’s Good Luck Chuck go in for seconds? In Howard (Pretty in Pink) Deutch’s Boston-set “comedy,” Dustin (Jason Biggs, nebbishy as always) is smitten with co-worker Alexis (Kate Hudson, slumming again), and she kind of likes him, too (according to the tone-deaf screenplay, at least), until he blurts out “I love you!” prior to passing first base. Enter Dustin’s best friend and roommate, Tank (Cook), a boorish Bostonian who’s mastered the art of being an asshole. Men hire him to take their former girlfriends out on dates so dire that the girlfriends run straight back into the arms of their exes. So, Dustin hires Tank. Predictability ensues. Hilarity doesn’t. Deutch somehow depicts the redemption of this douche. Why can’t Cook be flushed from screens as easily? 101 minutes | Boston Common + Fenway + Fresh Pond + Suburbs
