INSOMNIAC: Can we get some airplay for Giraldo?
|
Even if Attell and his cronies couldn’t say “fuck” on this DVD record of a wild on-stage night in Vegas, they’d still be funny. Attell puts his acerbic wit in gear on some of his usual topics — alcohol, midget, edgy sex, and combinations of the three; he also improvises about the plastic-surgery-enhanced women in his audience. (This is Vegas.) Rouse has a winning misfit’s demeanor that carries him through a solid but inspired set. Cook, the biggest live-comedy star of the moment, closes the night, but let’s hope he’s penned some new material since this taping; if you’re familiar with his work, you’ve seen and heard all of this several times before. The night’s real star is Giraldo. Sure, the former regular on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn is underexposed, but he also has a tempered sensibility that makes his riffs on drugs and marriage appealing and weirdly rational no matter how raw he gets. And that’s plenty.
