I know what you're thinking: Is Those Shocking, Shaking Days: Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk 1970-1978 really as mind-bendingly, earth-shatteringly, consciousness-alteringly awesome as its title would suggest? Abso-fucking-lutely. Those on the prowl for a crate-digging, continent-jumping collection of undeniable grooves, looking-glass classic-rockisms, and general weirdness need search no further than this fantastic, raucous stuff - most of it made under the shadow of a totalitarian government with a censorship fetish. Wild drum fills adjacent to tape-echo voices disappearing into the æther? Check. Organs that sound as if their black keys were melting into their white keys? Check. Guitars with tones that range from "five o'clock shadow" to "full-on Grizzly Adams"? Check. James Brown wannabes doin' their thang, and Zep wannabes doin' their thang? Check and check. Your new favorite outfit you've never heard of is either Black Brothers (a Creedence Clearwater Revival for the hallucinatory set, perhaps?) or Aka (Black Sabbath who?) - both of 'em freeing the people by first freeing their minds. And, to paraphrase Funkadelic, they'll be good to your earhole.
