The Week in Geek, May 2-9: Finish finals fast, or: a week without college students anywhere in sight

Happpy Star Wars Day!

Trust a college town like Boston to dial back the geekiness during finals week. Let's all pour some beer out for our studying homies while the rest of us fill our brains with movies and science and free comics.

MONDAY 5.2

[films] Narrative Shorts @ Somerville Theatre

The Independent Film Festival Boston (which is finishing up after a ridiculous weekend, which you can read about here) has shorts on pretty much all night, starting at 6:45pm. Sons of Perdition also screens tonight, which is a must-watch.

TUESDAY 5.3
[music] Pains of Being Pure at Heart @ Paradise Rock Club

With jams like "This Love is Fucking Right" and "Young Adult Friction", POBPAH is the pre-eminent nostalgic for horny teenagerdom band. Laser Orgy celebrities will be in attendance.

WEDNESDAY 5.4

[oof] Star Wars Day!!

May the FOURTH be with you!

[comix] Daniel Clowes @ Brookline Booksmith
Illustrator Dan Clowes (Ghost World) discusses his new book, Mister Wonderful, which is a hilarious take on the blind date scene, which you may be familiar with from personal experience.

THURSDAY 5.5

[film] Back to the Future @ Harvard CFA
Someday before I die, I'll realize the long-term goal of finding an orange vest and white and red Nike Blazers, so that I can finally be Marty McFly for Halloween. McFly, Doc, and Biff hit the screen 7:30pm; plus there's a bonus discussion on the physics of time travel.

FRIDAY 5.6

[film] Moon @ Harvard CFA
If you've missed this one so far, be sure to check it out now. It really is sweet. Peter Keough gave it 3.5 stars!! 7:30 pm!

SATURDAY 5.7

[muppets] Muppets Trivia @ Comicazi
A brief perusal of the Muppets wiki proves that I am the Muppet-master and will be literally washing the floors of Comicazi with the blood of challengers. Good luck.

[comics] Free Comic Book Day @ Newbury Comics
FCBD is a national event where comic book stores give out some free books. Newbury Comics in Harvard Square is participating, as well as a few other Boston locations. Excelsior!

[industry] INTERNATIONAL STEAMPUNK CITY @ Waltham, MA
"Our hope is to create an experience where visitors believe they have entered a real steampunk city. A city Jules Verne would be proud of." Saturday and Sunday in Waltham.

[words] David Sedaris @ Sanders Theatre
Haha, of course this is sold out.

MONDAY 5.9

[LLAP] Leonard Nimoy/Spock @ Metcalf Ballroom
"I'm a fucking walking paradox. No, I'm not." A quote that could have come from Nimoy as easily as from Tyler, The Creator, to describe one man's liminal existence between identities. Stay tuned for an online only interview with the Vulcan himself. Unfortunately, his talk is sold out.
