PHAN MAIL:
Dear Paul McCartney,
Dearest Macca,
To Sir Paul,
Hi Paul,
It's me, Mary. You may remember me from the show last night at Fenway Park - I was the one in the grandstand, dancing, and singing along with every song you performed last night. And, okay, I may have cried a little bit... and professed my undying love for you a few times. I know everyone's saying that you were, in fact, playing to a sold-out crowd of thousands, but I know you were really just singing to me the whole time. We even made eye contact, remember? Of course you do.
Well, Paul, I just want to thank you so much for having brought the show out to Boston. I know you were looking only at me all night, but I hope you're aware that you had the entire crowd going last night - from the roaring male fans who were playing air-guitar and beating invisible drums right along with your set, to the middle-aged women who were screaming and drooling over your good looks (don't worry, I don't feel threatened by them, I know you only have eyes for me), the little kids were dancing to your beats, and even the elderly woman seated two rows ahead of me was proudly brandishing her Union Jack, nodding along and smiling. Honestly, who could resist you? You filled up that enormous stage out in center field with the presence of a demigod, causing me to fall to my knees and revert back to the notorious Wayne's World chant: "We're not worthy!"
And your set list kicked ass. Like my favorite iPod playlist - only better, because you were playing them live! For me! "Drive My Car," "Back in USSR," "Live and Let Die," "Hey Jude" - how did you know those were all of my favorites? I really love the way you already know me so well.
I also really value your ability to open up to me. You mentioned that the ukulele you used was a gift from George Harrison, that your late wife, Linda, had taken most of the photographs being displayed on the backdrop behind you, and the Jimi Hendrix tribute you incorporated was in response to his memorization of the entire Sgt. Pepper's album, two days after its release. (Alright, so you name-drop a bit much, who doesn't?) I was struck with the amount of loss you've experienced as an artist, as a friend, as a husband - I couldn't help but wonder if it was at all hard for you to sing songs like "My Love" and "Here Today." I really appreciate you for sharing those tender moments with me. Thank you, Paul.
From the moment you removed your iconic, collarless jacket to the cheers of the women in the audience (I was the loudest) and started rocking out, to your energizing encores, including "I Saw Her Standing There," and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," it was overall a really a magical night. Thank you for the best first date ever. When should we get together again?
Love Always,
Mary Delsener
