Sleater Kinney break up: Corin Tucker solo record, anyone?

The last time thePhoenix.com talked to Sleater Kinney, Carrie Brownstein dropped her cell phone, fell down in the woods, and had to call the doctor. Which is much prefereable, message-wise, to the email that came over the wire this afternoon:

After eleven years as a band, Sleater-Kinney have decided to go on indefinite hiatus. The upcoming summer shows will be our last. As of now, there are no plans for future tours or recordings. We feel lucky to have had the support of many wonderful people over the years. We want to thank everyone who has worked with us, written kind words about us, performed with us, and inspired us. But mostly we want to extend our gratitude to our amazing fans. You have been a part of our story from the beginning. We could not have made our music without your enthusiasm, passion, and loyalty. It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile. With love and thanks, Sleater-Kinney.

Barring Jay-Z-style unretirement, then, it's over. Strangely, we're not as bummed as we thought we'd be. They made three really great records, but the other ones suggested that, no matter how long they kept at it, the formula wasn't going to get drastically different. The Woods suggested they'd taken career-guidance lessons from Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth -- a recipe for a long, boring decline. Still, we'd be lying if we said we weren't gonna miss 'em, especially since right at the end there they again revealed themselves to be ladies after our own hearts: the kind of chicks who'll start beef with Interpol and cover Danzig and shit. Farewell, Kinneyans -- we hardly knew ye.

Get your ears (or maybe brain) checked. The Woods was their best album, and if they truly are retiring, they are doing so at their peak.
