Rare Frequencies: Mudboy at Middle East; the Beeline Festival wraps up

MUDBOY: Dubious Liftings (Live in Northampton, 2009)

It's week two of an influx of Providence's most spellbinding performers gracing our ears with a show of tricked-out organs and infinite drones. MUDBOY (a/k/a Raphael Lyon) is a veteran of the legendary Fort Thunder noise-art scene. Known for his theatrical performances, Lyon combines found sounds and modified keyboards to create what's sometimes called "fantasy noise." Make of that what you will. In terms of stage show (or lack thereof), guitarist AREA C is relatively strait-laced and straightforward, but the music -- dense, beautiful drones -- is equally transporting.

MUDBOY + AREA C + SKELETONS OUT + WORK/DEATH | Middle East upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge | April 21 @ 8:30 pm | 18+ | $8 | www.mideastclub.com or 617.864.EAST

The BEELINE FESTIVAL winds up this weekend with a pair of shows at the Broad Institute at MIT. Friday night's concert features the DIY electronics of ENSEMBLE ROBOT and LOUD OBJECTS who will perform works by festival organizer Evan Ziporyn, electronic-music pioneer Paul Lansky, and others. Oh and, yes, live bees will be involved. Sunday's concert features a different sort of metal machine music, as Boston's own Balinese gamelan ensemble, GAMELAN GALAK TIKA, led by Ziporyn, plays music by Balinese composer dewa ketut alit. Ziporyn says Alit's work "feels like a microtonal Steve Reich crossed with a Bulgarian Conlon Nancarrow." The rest of the program will feature very early gamelan music. There will also be a free gamelan workshop prior to the concert; email info@galaktika.org to reserve a spot.

Rare Frequencies: Barrage a trois
Published 6/3/2009 by Susanna Bolle

They say good things come in threes. That’s certainly the case with releases on Boston’s own Intransitive Recordings. Specializing in experimental music, noise, and sound art, the label has released some tremendous CDs over the years by acts like NERVE NET NOISE, BRENDAN MURRAY, and KAPOTTE MUZIEK, pretty much always in groups of three.

This month, label head Howard Stelzer unleashes a new batch of recordings by an international array of experimental music luminaries and cult figures (in law enforcement, no less) from the outer reaches and beyond. After the jump, some MP3s to give you a sense of what’s happening on one of New England’s most adventurous record labels.
