VIDEO: Throwed! at the Middle East Upstairs

VIDEO: P. Nick Curran and Addison Post at Throwed!

Never did I think Wooderson from Dazed and Confused would be relevant to my life. “That's what I love about these college girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age,” the Matthew McConaughey character says while trolling the sidewalk outside the local pool hall, which could easily be the one outside the Middle East tonight. We’re here for Throwed!, the 18+ dance night held monthly at the Middle East Upstairs and hosted by the infamous DJ E-Marce. You know him as the driving force behind Paper and Campus. He’s also the only straight-edge kid we know who’s been arrested for “furnishing alcoholic beverages to persons under the age of 21.”

For a dude who seems to party all the time, E is soft-spoken to the point of shyness and nearly bashful when it comes to talking about his nights and his desire to give back to the community that reared him.

We arrived around 10 to meet E-Marce, and already shit was going off. People were even turned away. (From one irate reject: “These cunts won’t let me in!”)

Outside Throwed!, immaculately dressed 24-year-olds (we asked) smoked, brooded, professed their intentions to drink heavily, and observed their less-kempt underage counterparts across the way -- visions of their former selves, marked by X’s and studded belts. At what point the transformation from teen angster to twenties fashionista takes place, we’re not sure. But the scene played like an “Evolution of Man” diagram from an old science textbook. The X’d seem to represent the last generation of the MySpace personal profile user, given the feathered hair, suggestion of eyeliner, and general “I’m in a band you should totally go see” vibe. (New term: feather-core?)

Fashion aside, when it came to the party, no pretension kept these kids from hitting the floor right at opening, a novelty not often experienced in Boston nightlife: no sipping drinks till everyone is drunk enough to dance, no shenanigans relegated to the last hour. These partygoers Throwed! themselves into the mess from the get-go.

And maybe we can credit the vibe to E’s dedication to raising these kids right. As he made his way upstairs, admiring scenesters reached out to pat him on the back or merely to touch his garments, like Jesus’s disciples would have. Then again, maybe this party’s great because everyone gets shitfaced beforehand. Either way.
