King Richard's Faire '09: Fun, but for a tidy sum

This past weekend marked the opening of King Richard’s Faire in Carver, MA. Most Renaissance faires can only dream of what King Richard’s has achieved: a permanent venue at an 80-acre wooded park in which they’ve built an expansive medieval village that must be seen to be believed. I attended the faire several times in my middle and high school years, and I decided to drop everything on Labor Day for the chance to find out if the festival is still as fun as I remembered.

Johnny Cupcakes takes retro gaming to the Coolidge

Last Saturday night at midnight, Johnny Cupcakes brought late-80s gamer geek classic The Wizard to the Coolidge. People who crave their fix of both Nintendo nostalgia and exclusively designed Powerglove posters flocked to the theatre early that night. I arrived at 11:15 to find the line stretched down the alley.

I was up pretty late last night. How could I have been so irresponsible on a Wednesday? Well, I have an awful lot of work to do before Friday morning, and the list taped to my apartment wall still has a few items that aren’t crossed off: “finish armor,” “paint gloves,” “make arm bracelets,” and a couple other bits and pieces that I’ll have to wrap up tonight.

Vintage Gaming Exhibit: 8-bit Is Back at CyberArts

“I consider myself a casual gamer,” Andrew Y. Ames tells me as he guides me around his Vintage Gaming exhibit at 1305 Boylston, an old gas station turned gallery-for-rent. The exhibit, which is a part of the Boston Cyberarts Festival, involves several retro televisions, Ataris, a Wii, and a projection screen. The video-games displayed seem casual compared to plot-intense, graphics-heavy modern games, but these decades-old titles hold considerable interest for gamers who crave a vintage experience.
