As a comedian, Ricky Gervais is like an endangered panda: he can perform only under specific circumstances. Removed from his natural habitat (claustrophobic TV sets) and put into the wrong hands (studio superstar David Koepp), he looks pathetic — and not the funny pathetic that’s his forte. In his first starring role, Gervais plays a snobby NYC dentist who sees dead people. One of them is a fast-talking philanderer (Greg Kinnear) intent on breaking up the engagement of his mummy-researching widow (Téa Leoni). The rest is fill-in-the-blanks. Slick and watchable,
Ghost Town
might have made a passable rom-com with Matthew McConaughey, but it’s DOA as a Gervais comedy, with jokes administered under a kind of dental anesthetic. Diehards who have taken the fame-is-hell message of
Extras

Steve Albini is a pretty nerdy guy.
The dirt
ABC’s The Bachelor has long been one of the dirtiest shows on TV, a softcore brothel spritzed with the air-freshener pieties of courtly love.

Review: World's Greatest Dad
Robin Williams is Will Hunting good in Bobcat Goldthwait's dark comedy about a failed novelist whose fantasy of becoming a literary lion comes true in a way that's just plain wrong.
DJ clearinghouse
Of course, with such a hefty herd of MP3s, separating the sheep from the goats can be a Herculean endeavor.
Clever, clever
You’ve got to have at least some affection for a young local band smart enough to reference Archilochus.
Ice Age: The Meltdown
Carlos Saldanha’s brilliantly animated but scarcely believable sequel must take the cake for sheer elapsed time.
Enchanted
Wicked (cartoon) witch sends adorable fairy-tale princess down a rabbit hole and she’s deposited, suddenly human, in present-day Times Square.
Video vérité
Javier Téllez's 2007 black-and-white film "Letter on the Blind, For the Use of Those Who See" starts with a catchy premise: he gathered six blind New Yorkers at an empty public pool in Brooklyn to act out the fable of the blind men and the elephant.
