What the Belo cuts mean for Providence

UPDATED HERE

Tim Schick, administrator of the Providence Newspaper Guild, says the union fully expects recently announced Belo cutbacks to result in layoffs at the ProJo, "but we don't know where or how many."

With the Guild representing 300 people in Providence, there are 300 variations -- none of them based on special insight into what might actually occur, Schick says -- about what will actually happen. The union administrator, who got in touch with me a short time ago, was responding to my post on the subject two days ago.

-------

Informed speculation holds that Belo's plan to make some 500 company-wide cuts, perhaps as soon as in February, will mean the loss of roughly 50 to 80 jobs at the ProJo. Some of these will likely be photographers, who were unscathed by the layoffs last year, and news assistants, but it would be hard not to hit reporting positions as well. Seniority rules will apply, so some of Journal's best young reporters, sadly, could be on the line.

Meanwhile, more cuts at Channel 10 show how another longtime kingpin of local media is also facing a tougher time of it.
