Gingrich Says He Won't Be A Candidate

The Politico is reporting that Newt Gingrich, after all, will not seek the GOP nomination.
We're not completely surprised, though he was making noises about running. He was never going to come close to the $30 million fundraising goal he had recently set for himself. And, he had virtually no chance of winning either the nomination or the general.

Newt Gingrich is now saying he's out there trying to raise the $30 million he needs to run. That puts him yet another step closer to running. Look in a few weeks for that figure to be revised downward.

Newt Gingrich said today that if he can raise pledges of $30 million in advance, he might get in on about November 1.
If that really is the standard, it's a very high hurdle. The hunch here is that he couldn't reach it.

Consultant and commentator Dick Morris is the latest to see method in Newt Gingrich's madness, as he eyes an opening for Newt to get into the race in the fall. Again, we've long seen it as likely too.

For Those Who Think Gingrich Isn't Running II . . . .

After calling the GOP field "pygmies," Newt Gingrich has retreated somewhat, with the Politico now reporting that the former Speaker had dinner recently with Fred Thompson and may back his bid to be president. Maybe so, though it could be that Gingrich was just taking a moment to size up the opposition.
For Newt, it's probably now or never, which is why we still think he ends up a candidate.

Newt Gingrich Now Indicates It's Likely He'll Enter the Presidential Race

Give my colleague David Bernstein credit for predicting this all along: Newt Gingrich indicated in an appearance on Good Morning America this morning that he's likely to seek the presidency.
Of course, he'll deny that's what he meant in the hours and days ahead. But Gingrich can see the chaos on the GOP side and figures that there's a huge gap -- waiting to be filled by him, naturally.
