According to Reports, Thompson Preparing to Withdraw -- Some Expect Him Then To Endorse McCain

The Politico is reporting that absent a strong showing by Fred Thompson tonight -- which is unlikely -- he is preparing to withdraw and could endorse his long-time friend, John McCain.
The McCain bandwagon is rolling.

Later Update:For the record, Thompson spokespeople are denying the accuracy of the report. We'll see.

It’s apparent what the problem with the Fred Thompson campaign is: He hasn’t been able to come up with a slogan that encapsulates his unique approach to running for president. Clearly what he needs to do is take some traditional American slogans and adapt them. Here are five suggestions:

Thompson Latest Candidate to Move Essentially His Whole Effort to Iowa, Indicating He's in Big Trouble

Marc Ambinder is reporting that Fred Thompson, following in the footsteps of several second-tier Democrats, is moving virtually his entire effort to Iowa next week. This is obviously not a good sign for his campaign.
With Mike Huckabee moving into a clear lead in Iowa, it's pretty apparent that it's Huckabee who's executing the strategy of locking up the conservatives in the party that Thompson had hoped to carry out.

The New Washington Post and Newsweek Polls: Good News for Hillary; Bad News for Mitt and Fred

As we've noted before, national polls at this point have little predictive value but they do affect perceptions on the ground a bit in Iowa and New Hampshire. Thus two new polls this weekend that show Hillary ahead of Giuliani nationally will help quiet any discontent brewing against her front-runnership, since one of the main threats to her candidacy among Democrats is the fear that she can't win a general election.

Is the Bottom Falling Out for Fred?

My colleague David Bernstein has the news on the latest GOP poll in South Carolina, which shows Mitt Romney surging. The equally significant news from the poll (if, of course, it's accurate) is that Thompson appears to be sinking in a state he has to win -- given that he already looks like a goner in both New Hampshire and Iowa.

New Rasmussen GOP Poll Has Romney Lead in Iowa Down to 6 With Huckabee Moving Up

The latest Rasmussen numbers in Iowa for the GOP have Romney at 25%, Thompson at 19%, Huckabee at 18%, and Giuliani in fourth at 13%.
That's tight enough to make the race impossible to call, much less at this early stage. But two things to watch:

-- Huckabee is moving up in the state and if Fred Thompson continues to disappoint audiences, Huckabee could consolidate the support on the Right and steal the caucus;
