The metal files
This year’s Gigantour was the second incarnation of Dave Mustaine’s rolling metalfest. A two-DVD set of last year’s tour highlights is available now from Image, and I’ve culled, for your convenience, the five most metal moments. In ascending order:
5 | Russell Allen, the cozily beer-gutted singer of Symphony X, playing a sort of half-assed air guitar during the instrumental breaks.
4 | Warrel Dane, of Seattle’s Nevermore, addressing the pit: “We . . . are the enemies of reality! And I — WANT — CHAOOOOOS!!!!”
3 | The brief interviews with all the bands on the tour, in which they make awe-generating observations about Dave Mustaine and say things like, “We’ve known the Megadeth bassist forever, so he put in a good word for us and . . . the rest is history!”
2 | Fear Factory’s Burton C. Bell chompin’ down on those big tech nouns during “Transgression”: “I hate your con-ten-tion! I hate your vi-o-la-tion!”
1 | Mustaine spotlit at the beginning of “She-Wolf,” stuttering out the old-school riff and snarling, “The mother of all that is evil. . . . Her lips are poisonous venom!” That’s how you do it.
