I have seen Bear in Heaven play in the morning, afternoon and middle of the night. I’ve seen them play under a hot Texas sun, in a suburb at a pizza joint, and accompanied by a fog machine. No show is the same, yet there are two consistencies: they always kill it, and I always hear someone ask:

Sometime shortly after midnight a few weeks ago at the Billy Ruane memorial party, Buffalo Tom jolted a slowly fading Middle East crowd with a fistful of spirited '90s alt-rock vengeance. The Boston trio co-headlined with a brisk three-song set, including Ruane favorite "Larry," but it was enough to feel like the world would be a better place -- and Boston a better city -- with an active and successful Buffalo Tom among us.

Last night on Boston Accents, WFNX rolled out a Boston Music Awards-themed playlist, highlighting 17 acts that could end up walking proud to the Liberty Hotel podium on Dec. 5 as well as a handful of neglected "shaftees" selected by host Dave Duncan. Last month, "On the Download" premiered the first MP3 from Dirty Bombs, a Voltron-esque local supergroup featuring members of Televandals, the Luxury, and Conservative Man. Their collective mechanical roar persists here with "In Every City," a blistering post-millennial rock joyride that opens like an explosion, breaking at once into its electro-disco chorus before bouncing along through seas of fuzzed-out synths and thumps while maintaining a vicious alt-rock edge.

To the teenagers rocking the front of the No Age show on Tuesday: sorry if I punched/elbowed/kneed you in the face/shoulder/body. I realize I’m between six to eight years older than most of you, but once I felt that churning, nearly buoyant guitar attack of “Eraser,” I had to throw down my camera and sprint head-down and elbows-squared into the crowd.
