Arroyo to Boston: I've got issues

Talk about good damage control. Felix Arroyo didn't just air his dirty laundry on a Friday afternoon--he aired it on a Friday afternoon, two years before the next city-council election!

Just one question: what does "unfavorable driving record" mean, exactly?

Here's the press release put out by Matuya Brand, Arroyo's recently hired spokesperson, at 3:18 p.m. today. (Apparently Matuya's stint as Dianne Wilkerson's flack taught her some lessons about how to handle damaging revelations...)

"Information on Councillor Arroyo's Financial Matters

"City records show that I owe the City of Boston $399 in unpaid motor vehicle excise taxes for one year, for cars which I no longer own. I continue to believe I may have been incorrectly charged for vehicles which were not on the road, but will nevertheless resolve this issue in the near future.

"I additionally owed approximately $25 plus interest for a missing property tax payment in 1997, an amount which I believed had been paid through an escrow account set up through my mortgage company. I recently paid this amount in full.

I do not owe any other local, state, or federal taxes or student loans. \n\n

I also have an unfavorable driving record (I assure you that this does \n not and will never include operating a vehicle under the influence of \n alcohol). I am now using public transportation. \n

As an elected official, I understand that I am and should be held to a \n higher standard. I am grateful to represent the people of Boston and will \n continue to work to meet that standard. \n

Councilor Arroyo apparently has joined the ranks of Boston elected officials who feel they are "above the law." Unpaid taxes, suspended driving rights...and that's what he is telling us about. I hope someone is looking for the rest of the story. Maybe its time for him to stick to his mantra and treat the people of Boston with "respect" and allow the authorities to deal with him with "equity." He may yet get re-elected next time they're up for that -- like so many others -- he's now shown the Boston City Council is the end of his political road. Adios, mi amigo.

You've gotta be kidding me. If $399 in unpaid taxes is going to get somebody in trouble, we'll no longer have anybody in office. Not to mention nobody in this state can drive anyway. He's one of the few good ones. Cut the guy some slack.

Kurt, do you actually think that these small issues are enough to kill Arroyo's career? From the tone of your post, I'm guessing that it's just that you don't like the guy.

  • Kurt said:

it probably won't kill his career, but it will keep him right where he is -- he'll never be able to "move up" -- just like Dianne Wilkerson. He's just another phony -- (And I voted for him 2x). Sam Yoon is now my guy.

I don't hink anyone believes that Kurt voted for Felix. The fact that an elected official has to report out out $399 worth of unpaid excise tax show you how ridiculous things have gotten. I for one think it is insignificant. No one is saying he isn't going to pay simply that he is invistigating if he was assesed correctly. Would you or I do anything different? I applaud Felix for putting out his financial business, however, I don't think it is needed nor do I believe that he "feels he is above the law" take a look at his revelation again there is no law being broken. By the way Sam is Felix's guy as well or have you conviently forgotten all the work Felix did to help elect him. If you did call Sam. I am sure he hasn't forgotten.

Progressives need a candidate to believe in without baggage. One that will have a chance to move up and actually win higher office (Mayor? Congress?) On the Boston City Council, it appears that there is only one now in Sam Yoon. Felix has hurt himself. May not be fatal, but hurt nonetheless. If you think not, ask Marie St. Fleur if things like this can cause problems when you announce you're running for higher office. It's not the amount of money, but the pattern of bad judgement or dishonesty that raises red flags for people. Progressives may be willing to say "big deal" but others won't. K.

Marie didn't pay state and federal taxes and has not paid student loans. Felix is investigating if he was assesed correctly for an excise tax. Everyone except for those who already did not like him, like Kurt, will say big deal.

Kurt, Felix just put out his personal financial business. Completely opening himself up for scrutiny. Trust me when I tell you that the press will look deeper into this (adam am I right?) and I would bet the mortgage that they would find nothing of significance. I think you are confusing the hot air you are full of as smoke and you might just be the phony you label Felix as. Once again no one believes you voted for Felix twice and I doubt you voted for Sam.
    February 27, 2006 4:50 AM
  • Kurt said:

John - It's not about me. It's about Felix. He invited this inquiry. Let the media investigate and let the voters of Boston decide. Maybe it will be much ado about nothing...or maybe not. You seem a bit defensive, did one of your heroes get deflated recently? K.

  • Matt said:

One note (to take this in a slightly different direction: I would NOT compare St. Fleur to Felix. For one thing, her financial issues were far more significant and she didn't reveal them herself. And when you get down to her record, she really ain't all that progressive, either. It's too bad what happened to her, but I can guarantee you that one of my heroes was not deflated in that brouhaha.
