Maura rides again

New in this week's Phoenix: an assessment of the Suffolk criminal clerk's race, starring Maura Hennigan (who needs no introduction) and Robert Dello Russo (who probably does).

Adam-I was surprised that you wrote that the Mayor is abstaining from taking a position on the race (“Menino might abstain, hoping that she gets the clerk’s job and stays put?”). The actions of Menino’s staff and foot-soldiers tell a different story. Call around and ask about some of the ward committee endorsement votes. Every Menino backer endorsed Dello Russo (i.e. Ward 5 vote where Councilor Mike Ross and Rep. Marty Walz voted for Dello Russo). Also, at some of the cultural festivals you’ll find Menino’s liaison to the Latino community walking around Dello Russo. Neutral he is not and the media should tell it like it is. And yes, I think Maura is an opportunistic. Shame on all of the Steve Murphy-haters who called him out for being unqualified to be sheriff but who are now supporting Maura. Mat

Interesting points, Mat, and thanks for making them. Let me ask a follow-up question: my understanding is that Menino was actively, aggressively engaged on behalf of Sal La Mattina, and was really pissed off about his guy's close win. Do you think Menino's going to get equally involved in this race?
