Mass. Office Brings Down Keroack

Last November, the White House appointed Eric Keroack to head family planning programs within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Keroack had previously worked at Boston's A Woman's Concern [corrected], which promotes abstinence instead of birth control, so reproductive-rights groups were not too thrilled.

Apparently, the Massachusetts Office of Medicaid took some sort of action against Keroack, presumably related to his work at A Woman's Choice -- whatever the complaint, it has not been made public.

Yesterday, Keroack abruptly resigned, and HHS cited the Massachusetts action as the reason.

Undoubtedly, this will trigger some disclosures relating to A Woman's Concern's activities. Should be interesting to watch.

I had a feeling Keroack wouldn't last long, given his mixed record on birth control. But David, I think the organization in MA Keroac worked for was called "A Woman's CONCERN," not "A Woman's CHOICE," just FYI. An organization with "Choice" in it's title would obviously have birth control and info about it distributed to their patients, which AWC did not do while Keroack was medical director there. Lastly, though I'd like to know more about why he abruptly resigned, I'd like to know even more why he took the job as director of an abstinence center (AWC) when, according to HHS spokesperson Christina Pearson in a Washington Post article last November, he prescribed birth control to married AND unmarried women in private practice for 20 years. And did the Bush administration know about his private practice before they picked him to run family-planning programs in HHS and did they pick him because of his mixed record or just his AWC work? And what has he done since his appointment regarding contraceptives? Lots of questions, not enough answers at this point.

Oh, incidentally, Lindner was chairman of Chiquita when it was paying millions to terrorist organizations a few years ago.
