New In The Phoenix: Mayoral Contender Power Rankings

Two years out from the 2009 Boston mayoral vote, I take a look at whether there's any chance of someone other than Tom Menino winning that election -- and rank the 40 Bostonians with the best shot at it. My top five: 1) Michael Flaherty, 2) Ralph Martin, 3) John Tobin, 4) Chris Gabrieli, 5) Steve Lynch.

It's in this week's Phoenix, out tomorrow but online now:

Menino's Hit List: 40 potential candidates for the 2009 election who could take on the mayor — if they have the courage.

Are you in the bag or what? Flaherty's prom picture from 1980 is a bit of a stretch no? He looks like Duckie from Pretty in Pink….gimme a break will ya!! He is going into his second decade in City Hall doing and has done NOTHING !!! He has no choice but to run…he knows when the seat becomes open it will be a donnybrook and wouldn’t finish in the money …this is his only chance!! Just because we political junkies are starved for a real race doesn’t mean we can invent one. I am no Menino acolyte but there are no real threats to the Mayor because he has done a very good job. Give him credit where it is deserved. Is he flawless…. No but he has steered the ship admirably. Also … Peter Meade? C’mon will ya. The next Mayor will be in Menino the next New Mayor will be in 2013 and will be……. **Steve Lynch if he decides he has had enough of DC….. **Someone from Voter rich West Roxbury with City wide appeal…..Marian Walsh nope, Tobin? Nope! Try John Connolly. Citywide base, ability to fundraise prodigiously. **Someone from City Hall that is in place to get the ground troops…like whoever is Council president in 2012 Menino’s last year… Consalvo? Menino II or Connolly again. Your sources are out of touch you need to speak with people who actually play the game rather than speculate about their friends…..

Wow, rough "Dotrat." I must confess that I find the article pretty amusing. A neat concept. If Menino did decide NOT to run again, it would be a free-for-all, for sure. But, none of these folks will take on Menino. They all realize that barring a huge financial collapse or worse, Menino is in there as long as he likes. While casting a very wide net is a good idea - and makes for a better article - you missed a few names. How about Susan Tracy? Jerry McDermott? Michael Travaglini? Charles Yancey? And take off John Fish and Ron Bell. They live in Milton fer-gosh-sakes!

C’mon Tony…your doing the same thing Dan is doing….throwing names & seeing what sticks. You infer that these people are “afraid” to take on Menino….is it fear or commonsense? Menino is hugely popular because of the job he does. These folks you name might not be “afraid”, maybe they just feel he is doing the job & why run a kamikaze mission a la Peggy & Maura. Seriously…. How about Susan Tracy? She Is being vilified in her own “base”…(I use that term loosely) she is carrying the water for the BRA & all the colleges. She sold her soul for the Dollah and as a result she could not get elected dog catcher. Jerry McDermott….ah, dude he lives in Westwood…. Michael Travaglini is making half a million dollars a year …no sweating involved. Charles Yancey? I am going to assume you are being cute, because everyone knows Charles is an empty suit. It’s nice to have grandiose designs on who should be the next Mayahh, but you can’t be silly about it. History shows that soldiers win wars…..whoever has the best base wins the race. Ask David Finnegan & Jim Brett, they had the pedigree but Flynn & Menino had the people. The biggest voting bloc in the City now is West Roxbury……

David: I thought it was an interesting article, but there seemed to be some editorializing with the pictures: The Flaherty pic was from his first race in 1995, the Tobin picture was at least 7 years old, and the Meade and Tolman pictures looked like they were from the late 80's/early 90's. Very odd.

Tony, It is true that both Ron Bell and John Fish live in Milton, however, only one of the people you named lives in the city. That would be Charles Yancey. Susan Tracy: Newton Jerry McDermott: Westwood (as Dotrat pointed out) Michael Travaglini: Winchester Nice try though.
