New In The Phoenix -- Palin In New Hampshire

I blogged some thoughts after Sarah Palin's Granite State visit last week, but in this week's issue of the Boston Phoenix -- in print tomorrow, online now -- I write an actual column about it. I watched her speak at all three venues on her one-day barnstorm of New Hampshire, and spoke with many people about her, ranging from housewives to high-ranking politicians.

From it all, came this week's column. Enjoy!

Travels With Sarah: As Palin tours New Hampshire, signs of Biblical calling, talent on the stump, and a shot at 2012

In politics, as in real estate, everything is location, location, location.  While Alaska may be a way cool place (sorry) it's also out of the way.  Politics depends heavily on meet-and-greet, person-to-person and face-to-face communication with sit downs, meetings and other gatherings. You have to be in the right place at the right time.  Palin, as governor of Alaska, is out of the loop literally and figuratively.  She'll have the distance she desires from the eastern establishment press.  She'll stage-manage her appearances in the lower 48 states as she does now.  Looking past a McCain defeat in 2008 and  toward 2012, Palin needs seasoning and political maturity to advance.  A presidential nomination is most unlikely.  She'd be better off strengthening her support among the evangelical Christian conservative community which propelled her into the national scene. She can certainly again be a VP nominee.  The early money has Mitt Romney as the fave to be the 2012 GOP prez nominee should McCain fail in 2008. Romney's Mormon faith is of concern to the religious right wing.  Palin, as VP nominee, can do for Romney in 2012 what she's now doing for McCain.  Make his candidacy acceptable to the evangelical Christian community within the GOP and nationwide.
