Will Mitt Never Shut Up?

In today's Globe there's a must-read piece of political humor -- unintentionally so -- penned by long-time Romney spokesperson Eric Fehrnstom. In this op-ed, Fehrns the philosoph muses on the difficulties of running a national campaign in the new digital age.

His main lament is that, unlike the more responsible traditional media, these Internets make people believe untrue things. This is an interesting hypothesis, because it had been my observation that, during the time Romney was in the race, the main reason that people believed untrue things about other GOP candidates was Romney's campaign. (Usually spreading those untruths through the web, particularly via the Drudge Report -- which Fehrnstrom specifically cites as a spreader of Truth for alerting people to the McCain "Bomb bomb Iran," which Drudge almost certainly did at the behest of the Romney camp.)

The main reason that people believed untrue things about Romney himself, I had always thought, was that they mistakenly believed words that came out of Mitt Romney's mouth.

Romney himself has been more visible just in the few days after the election than during the months he was supposedly helping stump for McCain. I particularly enjoy this Q&A with Fortune. His #1 advice for President-elect Obama is to put the good of the country above politics and party. You know, like Mitt always does. Oh, and specifically don't worry if that hurts your chances for re-election; after all "it would be beneficial if our presidency consisted of only one term," says Mitt 2012.

Romney is concerned, however, that the unions will pressure Barry O to sign card-check legislation, ie changing the voting mechanism for unionizing, which "would do more to harm America's long-term competitiveness than almost anything I can imagine."

Really?

Oh yeah, long-term competitiveness has nothing to do with, oh I don't know, being unable to live on 10 cents an hour, like they do in China? That said, the bill is a bad bill because it does take away members right to a secret ballot. A town meeting is not the same as a secret ballot.

Meanwhile, back at the raunch, the pulpy Boston Herald, in its Saturday edition, screamed I'M NO BACK STABBER in its fevered front page under the header, "Mitt's Camp Denies It Is Behind Attacks On Palin." Turning the page, we find Willard Mitt Romney up to his ole flip-floppin' ways. Romney hisself defended Sister Sarah on CBS' "Early Edition." Mitt's motormouths, though, according to a South Carolina newsletter (www.thePalmettoscoop.com) bannered "Former Romney staffers behind Palin trashing" and spelled out how many Romney 'roids, including former campaign spokesman Kevin Madden, were slicing and dicing Sarah on toast as a way to get her off the menu for Romney's 2012 romp. Willard Mitt long ago figgered out how to eat your cake and have it too. Romney, a Mormon, still needs help in assuaging the religuous right wing Geezers On Prilosec. A possible VP choice would be Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, 10 years younger than Barack Obama, an American succe$$ story born of Punjabi Indian emigre parents. Jindal's staunchly pro-life, all for the Patriot Act and has 100% approval from the Gun Owners of America. Politically, anyway, he's "a whiter shade of Palin."

It's funny that Romney staffers would be attacking Palin since the rumor around some of my MassGOP sources is that Romney was the one who first started eyeing Palin as a possible VP selection ... for a Romney/Palin ticket, to counter a possible Clinton/Whomever ticket.

That's when Palin started getting her act together, back in January, when it looked like she would be considered.

When McCain wanted to pick Lieberman, all hell broke loose and his staffers made him pick Palin.

Palin did her job - she gave women an option who may have been turned off by Obama and she rallied the GOP base. But it was not nearly enough.

I spent well over a decade as an advocate at the statehouse. I recall Eric as a your reporter working at the statehouse for he Herald. He was an excellent investigative reporter working under fellow reporters Jon Wells, Bob Connolly, and Peter Lucas Wells and Fehrnstrom as a team worked above and beyond sccoping the Globe and plying their trades through hard work.

Eric was always fair and objective as well as helpful. When other reporters would only listen to the establishment elected politicos to always gain stories, both Eric and Jon Wells would listen to those of us reporting accountability. These two would even report our accurate views even in contradiction to the Herald editorial board.

Unfortunately for Eric, the career path in the media was not there and the wage scale quuite low. Journalism then lost a bright competent investigative reporter. Supporting a family, he stunned me when he accepted a job with Joe Malone and later Mitt Romney.

With Malone when I and others stood up to the waste, fraud, and abuse in the State Treasurers Office,Eric was a loyal and hard hitting adversary and we had several confrontations during legisltive hearings before the Public Service committee and at times quite caustic.

The same also when working later for Mitt Romney. I do not agree with Eric on many issues. However, he was always available to have a discussion on issues that I diagreed with him on.

journalism and the media has changed in the last 20 years and newspapers are becoming relics of the past. The free press that our citizens expect and taken for granted is in rapid. I just imagine what Eric Fehrnstrom could havebeen like so many other potential investigative reporters could have been if newspapers and investigative reporting was not in such decline with little or no job opportunities and career advancement.

Fall of '07 saw the then-viable Rudy Giuliani indicating Sarah Palin as a possible VP. Johnny Mac mentioned Sarah as a possible VP in March '08, a day after he had enough delegates for the GOP nomination. He did not again mention her until he announced her selection. MassGOP sources, as noted by Tony Schinella, indicate Mitt wanted Sarah though it woulda been truly a shotgun marriage of personality opposites. Have read that Louisiana Guv Bobby Jindal was McCain's top choice. Jindal, 10 years younger than Barack and a successful son of Punjabi Indian emigres, is pro-life, pro-Patriot Act and loved by the Gun Owners of America organization. The world flip-flopped on election day and Mitt's choice instantly became his nemesis. The venerable Globe carried a story that Romney staff inside McCain's camp were out to discredit Palin. Romney need not worry about the GOP nominating the first woman presidential candidate ever. He's best off watching Mike Huckabee and keeping an eye on Newt.
