Mass. Women's Schools Make Good

Bay State native Ellen Moran was named today as communications director for the Obama White House -- which we know is a very important job because we saw Toby Ziegler doing it on The West Wing. Moran was born in Amherst and went to Wheaton College; according to what I could dig up quickly, it appears that she graduated in Spring '88, and Wheaton began accepting boys (ick!) that Fall, so we can fairly say that she attended a Massachusetts all-women's college.

That makes her the second senior-level staffer who can make that claim: Mona Sutphen, Mount Holyoke '89, has been named deputy chief of staff. (That's Josh Lyman in The West Wing.)

Oh, yes, and it appears that Hillary Clinton nee Rodham, Wellesley '69, will be Secretary of State.

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton for Secretary of State? Mais non! Seems like a repeat of the "Hillary for Vice President" drama. Whole thing got started on 11/10/08 when Glamour mag had a "women of the year" event at Carnegie Hall. Many were featured including Condi Rice and Hillary who stole the show. Hillary commended Condi and spoke generally and favorably about the

Secy. of State duties. Next day, the New York Post and Daily News each rushed to judgment declaring Hillary wanted to be Secy. of State! No prior mention of this possibility. Zilch. Her name doesn't appear in the laundry lists of possible Obama appointments for anything. Clinton, a quick study, indicated her surprise that she hadn't been considered for a post. A meeting in Chicago a few days later between Hillary and Barack was reportedly leaked by Hillary's pals and the story's been rollin' since. Obama and Clinton differed dramatically on foreign policy in their endless debates and the

strong-minded and strong-willed Clinton, as Secy. of State, must defer to the President. Does Barack want Bill Clinton as Co-Secretary?  Hillary will likely back out, citing her promise to serve NY residents and her intent to help out Barack on health and human service issues.  Clinton wants to be known as the person who made health care available and affordable to all Americans and Secretaries of State don't do that.
