Boston Globe calls election for Martha Coakley?

Boston.com briefly put up this map of the final results of today's election -- some 8 hours before polls closed!

As you can see, over 2 million people voted, with Coakley eking out a 50-49 victory.

The map was fully interactive, so you could roll over and get town-by-town results -- above we show Coakley taking Cohasset 56-43.

They took the map down shortly after I pointed it out on Twitter. But not before we Phoenix troublemakers got the screen shots!

Now, if the final numbers end up matching these, the Republicans may really have reason to question the integrity of the process...

UPDATE: From Bob Powers of the Globe, the official explanation of what we saw:

"[Associated Press] was testing an election data feed to its Massachusetts clients. During corresponding tests at our end, the feed of AP's hypothetical test data was inadvertently posted for a few minutes on a single subsection page within ur site. As soon as the error was discovered, it was removed. We regret the mishap."

It's probably just test data the programmers used for their interactive graphic and inadvertently pushed to the live site when preparing for returns to come in.

Wait, what exactly is the conspiracy theory here? That the election commission decided to rig the election and their first step was to tell the Globe, a newspaper?

Or that the Globe put the map up without switching off the test data set that was used during development?

I know I myself am terrible about this (websites in progress should not be live), but the Globe probably put in sample numbers to see how it works.

The media often posts what look like early results, but this is typically just testing their results Web page with dummy numbers. It's great that people caught screen shots though, because if the results do match it will be important.

No one "tests" anything on a live website, any more than you post fake but real appearing articles to the front page as a "test."

There is no reason to do so, and every reason not to do so, especially with something as sensitive as an election.  If for some reason you were to do such a thing, you certainly wouldn't use real appearing data.

The Globe was just testing the app they use to display this information.  They used garbage data to run it.  It wasn't supposed to go live with the garbage data in it, it was supposed to be blank.

Someone forgot to decouple the test database.

Those must be the results for some other race, because it looks like Brown is not even taking his own Mass Senate district in that map.

  • CraigH said:

As an engineer, I purposely skew dummy numbers so they look nothing like actuals so as to avoid confusion. They could have posted the results of the last Senate race as dummy numbers.

Of course no one will use these numbers as actuals now that they have been publicized. I would have held onto the screenshots until after the election.

BevHarris...professionals are perfectly capable of testing their results web pages without publishing publicly.  What happened here is just clumsy.

The importance is not likely to be "if the results do match".  The importance is to demonstrate yet another example of main stream liberal media bias.

This has got to simply be dummy test numbers.  I added up the total number of Brown and Kennedy votes, and it comes to 1,032,451 - one vote more than Coakley, setting up a storyline that Kennedy cost Brown the election by 1 vote.

I doubt anyone would seriously buy that if it were reported as the real results.  Much more likely that the person programming the test numbers is holding out hope for a Coakley win.
