Review: The Fourth Kind

Creepy, but clumsy
By DAVID WILDMAN  |  November 4, 2009

If the “actual footage” used in this film is real, then there’s something going on up in Alaska even more frightening than the rise of Sarah Palin. Recently widowed backwoods shrink Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) finds that many of her patients have dreamt of a mysterious barn owl outside their window.

After hypnosis, one patient kills his family and another has a psychotic alien-abduction episode. The supposed taped documentation of all this is truly creepy (though the footage does fizz out suspiciously whenever anything supernatural happens).

Filmmaker Olatunde Osunsanmi, however, does such a clumsy job of arguing that ancient Sumerian aliens are causing havoc in Nome that he spoils any chance he might have had to make a decent scary movie. His overwrought technique involves aping the archival footage with actors portraying the “real” characters and then juxtaposing the two in split-screen. It just shows how bad his actors are.

Re: Review: The Fourth Kind
lol to your Sarah Palin reference... but i have to disagree with your overall review (if you can even call it that). i thought the fourth kind did an excellent job using the split-screen footage. the technique was very effective and really helped build up the suspense during those freaky scenes. this movie was definitely one of the scariest things i've seen in years, and i think it's definitely a must-see especially if you're up for a scare. it's not your typical blood, guts and gore kind of movie, but what's incredible is the movie's attempt to really reach the audience's deep psychological fear. overall, this movie gets two-thumbs up in my book.

Call this a guide to recognizing your sophomore slump. Dito Montiel won the Directing Award at Sundance with his autobiographical 2006 debut, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints , but that film had Robert Downey Jr. and Chazz Palminteri.
