MP3 of the Week: Thick Shakes "Go Back To New York"
Weymouth-based indie label Aurora 7 Records follows up last year’s Girlfriends “Gov’t Seizure” seven-inch with three new tracks on wax from THICK SHAKES. Although hard copies of Why Buy the Cow won’t hit the spinning wheels of dingy nightclubs and bedroom dance parties till spring, this collection of blurry garage-rock racket has already invaded Bandcamp. The sudsy troika is led by kiss-off anthem “Go Back to New York,” an infectious graveyard shimmy of skeleton shakedowns that introduces not only a more frenzied sound than the Shakes’ initial output but also a fourth member privy to a Farfisa combo organ. It adds up to an aural whirlwind so keen that the lyrics namedrop Frederick Law Olmsted. Thick Shakes bring their newfound mojo over to Church (repent, repent, soul shaker!) on February 5 with the never-say-die Lyres, Major Stars and Class of 2011’s Mmoss, but in the meantime, grab the MP3 below.
