My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me | Kathryn Davis, Kelly Link, Maria Tatar | Host: Kate Bernheimer
3 pm, Boston Public Library Popular Reading Room
Kelly Link is a national treasure. Her three short-story collections — Pretty Monsters, Magic for Beginners, and Stranger Things Happen — can inspire wonder in even the most cynical of readers. Along with writers such as Chris Adrian, she represents the vanguard of an unsentimental, oftentimes scary American magical realism. Little wonder she was asked to contribute to My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me, a recent fairy tale anthology edited by Kate Bernheimer. Bernheimer — editor of the Fairy Tale Review — will be on hand to read from her story in that collection, as will the novelist Kathryn Davis. The panel also features Maria Tatar, chair of folklore and mythology at Harvard, who has written extensively on the Brothers Grimm.
