Poetry of Our Time | Elizabeth Alexander, Edward Hirsch, Ellen Doré Watson | Host: Lloyd Schwartz
12:30 pm, Cloud Place, 647 Boylston Street
For several weeks at the beginning of 2009, bookstore clerks were deluged with a highly uncommon request not heard since Oprah's endorsement of Maya Angelou: scores of customers came in asking for a poem and wouldn't take no for an answer. The work in question, "Praise Song for the Day," was Obama's inaugural poem. Its author, Elizabeth Alexander, will visit from New Haven to read it. Long required in undergraduate poetry courses, How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry somehow delivers on its title. Its author, the poet Edward Hirsch, is on hand to read from his latest collection, The Living Fire. Smith College's Ellen Doré Watson will read a poem, too. Phoenix classical-music editor, Pulitzer Prize winner, and killer poet Lloyd Schwartz will emcee.
