Home and Away | Bill Bryson, Tony Hiss | Host: Robin Young
3:30 pm, John Hancock Hall at the Back Bay Events Center, 180 Berkeley Street
It's fitting that Robin Young should host a discussion the Book Festival has billed as transportive. The WBUR host's sonorous voice could easily be described as such; listening to Here and Now often feels like taking a journey to the library, or possibly Whole Foods. Bill Bryson, beloved for A Walk in the Woods and A Short History of Nearly Everything, has published a new book about the rural English parsonage in which he lives; At Home is a meandering history of domesticity. Tony Hiss's new book, In Motion, documents the thrill of getting out of the house. In it, he coins the term "Deep Travel," which refers to the special exhilaration gleaned from awakening all the senses. The discussion is sponsored by Google; a representative will be on hand to yell commercial slogans when the authors say certain keywords.
