Updating TheOfficial Preppy Handbook couldn't have been easy. In the 30 years since Lisa Birnbach wrote it, the OPH has sold zillions of copies worldwide and spawned legions of imitators, including that pallid charlatan The Hipster Handbook. Still, Birnbach — who was an editor at Spy, a magazine some of us miss daily — visits Boston in honor of her sequel, True Prep. Its designer, Chip Kidd, has had a longer and more wide-ranging literary career than many contemporary novelists. As compelling as its creators are, a walk through Harvard Square proves the sequel isn't strictly necessary — those teenage popped-collar types lugging their tennis rackets seem to have been teleported from 1983. Joining Birnbach and Kidd is essayist and This American Life contributor David Rakoff (see our interview) and Jared Bowen, who counts among public television's nattiest arts reporters.
