The Novel: A Prognosis | Daphne Kalotay, Nick Montfort, David Shields | Host: Jay Parini
10:30 am, Boston Public Library, Rabb Hall
Only a novelist of supreme confidence would agree to sit on a panel with David Shields. In his recently published polemic, Reality Hunger, Shields cobbled together passages from works of creative nonfiction to call for the death of the novel. His readings are filled with eager English majors checking to see if their degrees have become even less viable. Will Daphne Kalotay — a Brookline writer whose first novel, Russian Winter, came out this fall — be able to singlehandedly defend her profession? As host, Jay Parini can't come to the novel's rescue, though surely a poet and literature professor who writes novels about the lives of famous novelists would have had a good defense. If his Web site is to be believed, it's doubtful Nick Montfort will be much help — the MIT digital media professor calls text-based computer games "computational literary art."
