[phlipcam video] Woven Bones @ T.T. The Bear's and Sky Larkin @ Great Scott

There’s something about Woven Bones’ static garage sound — sharing that fossilized Jesus & Mary Chain DNA with the likes of modern noise-polluters A Place To Bury Strangers, the Vandelles and Screen Vinyl Image — that always makes me close my eyes real tight and envision armies of skeletons dancing disjointedly across graveyards. Though the Austin trio — profiled in this week’s Phoenix by contributor Reyan Ali — features a more stripped-down approach than their NY/DC brethren, it’s still a barrel-roll of surf-ish rock straight from Reid University, siphoning the greatest dance euphoria when it gets lost in fits of feedback and noise. Though I was in total Sunday Night Lurker Mode, I was able to phlipcam Woven Bones last night from the back of T. T. The Bear’s in Cambridge. Lead Bone Andy Burr introduced this jam as a “new” track and urged everyone to do the Do-si-do. How Texas.

To get properly psyched for Woven Bones (with the aid of a gallon jug of Will Clarks), earlier in the evening I made a quick pit stop in Allston to catch the beginning of Sky Larkin’s set at Great Scott. The UK power pop trio, strongly recommended by my colleague P. Nick Curran on Friday, was making their Boston debut and didn’t let a bunch of broken strings on Doug Adams’ bass guitar sour the evening, instead trudging on and finishing their set shorthanded but not outmatched in a game of mid-'90s collegiate alt-rock worship. Would have loved to hung around and caught headliner Blood Red Shoes, but I had to river-hop with enough time to catch the aforementioned Bones across the mighty Charles (and of course, hitting up Great Scott made me miss out on Thick Shakes and Frankie Rose & the Outs). While my time there was short, we’ll have this clip to live on in our hearts.
