Update: Ted Stevens not dropping the "series of tubes" thing

Updating a previous item:

Apparently Ted Stevens, the man behind the "Series of Tubes" remarks, has stated he would like to appear on the Daily Show to respond to the mockery. Good for him, we guess, but also . . . good luck with that. He claims to "have a letter from a big scientist" that backs up his use of the word "tubes." Again, good luck with that.

Meanwhile, The Daily Show followed up on the issue recently (we'll say it aired last week, but we don't actually recall) with help from Brookline's own John Hodgman, who, from what we understand, is, in fact, a PC.

The State coming to DVD (Finally)

Fans of MTV's The State, a sketch comedy show that featured Michael Ian Black, Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney, Michael Showalter, and David Wain before they starred in Comedy Central shows and cult feature films (playing tonight, Bostonians), will finally be released on DVD. This is according to Lennon and Garant, who made the announcement while appearing at ComicCon.

The shows will be re-scored, though, which we suspect will make certain sketches less funny, particularly this one:

Road House is the new Star Wars

Remember last year when you were in England, and you asked the guy in the funnny hat how far the museum/pub/pub was, and he told you, 'ooh, it's far, about so-and-so meters?' And you said to him "I used to bulls-eye womprats in my T-16 back home. They're no bigger than so-and-so meters." And remember the look on his face? Yeah. You know why? Cause Star Wars references don't work anymore. They have been replaced. And you have TNT to thank.

You see, in the late 1990s, TNT cablecast the Rowdy Herrington's 1989 film Roadhouse on average 2,043 times a year. It basically ran on a loop, broken up only by infomercials. By 2000, it had seeped into the unconscious of every American male. Some may have actually been tuned into TNT, while others were next door watching one of the annual 463 Braves game on TBS. Either way, Roadhouse starting inching its way into the American male brain. And now that the new DVD is out, Roadhouse has finally become the new Star Wars.
When you're injured: "Pain don't hurt."
When you're meeting the boss in a job interview: "I thought you'd be bigger."
When you're firing someone: "There's always barber college."
When a polar bear falls on you: "A polar bear fell on me."
And of course: "I used to fuck guys like you in prison," which can pretty much be used during any church service.

That's just scratching the surface. So, goodnight Star Wars. Sit your Nerfherdering, I got-a-bad-feeling-about-this, that's-no-moon-that's-a-space-station ass next to Python's Holy Grail, Fletch, and Little House in the reference old-folks home.

oh, and Lance Bass is gay.

Marci eats meat

No, not like that.

Marci is a Boston-area woman is both single and a vegetarian. But she'd like to change both things - if at least for one night. One of her housemates (presumably with her cooperation) started a site and with it, a contest, to see who will be the lucky guy (25-39) to take Marci out on the town for a night in which she will, as you may have guessed, eat meat.

Again, not like that.

Here's that link again.

The OC's Seth to write real comic book!

Why do we care? We don't. But when DC Comics sends out a press release at 10:46 on a Sunday Night, you know Slop Culture will be all over that shit. (Mostly just to point out the fact that DC Comics is sending out press releases at 10:46 on a Sunday night. Don't these people have lives? No? How 'bout HBO?).

Anyway, yes, Adam Brody from the OC will be writing Red Menace, a six-parter under the Wildstorm imprint. Of course, Brody as Seth once pitched Wildstorm a comic on the show, as the press release tells us without the least bit of humility. This is a scary, scary trend. So does this mean the guy from Entourage will actually get to play Aquaman in a real movie? Will Jason Lee actually wear that mustache in real life?  Will Irene get Lyme disease and get slapped by Stephen in real life?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 'THE O.C.' STAR ADAM BRODY TO PEN WILDSTORM COMIC SERIES 'RED MENACE'

San Diego, CA – WildStorm , an imprint of DC Comics, is proud to announce plans to publish RED MENACE, a six-part miniseries written by 'The O.C.' star Adam Brody and the writing team of Danny Bilson and Paul DeMeo, with interior artwork by industry veteran Jerry Ordway. RED MENACE #1 goes on sale in October.

"What is more thrilling and flattering for a creator than Life imitating Art?  Ever since Seth--the character played by Adam Brody--made his pitch for his graphic novel at WildStorm on the OC, it's been a pet passion of mine to bring this dream to life," said Jim Lee, Editorial Director--WildStorm and big-time OC fan. "As every fan of the OC knows, Seth is a comic book fan and creator and it's one of those great but surreal moments in life that we get to join forces with Adam to create a project which brings his fresh, unique talents to a whole new audience!"

Pairing Brody with the veteran television writing and production team (and co-writers of DC's THE FLASH)  was a no-brainer, said Lee, as Bilson and DeMeo bring to the project a level of familiarity with the craft of comic writing along with keen insight and a knack for crafting thrilling adventures.

The story of RED MENACE begins at the height of the Cold War. Welcome to Los Angeles, home to crooked cops, slimy criminals and sexy starlets and seething with the glamour and glitz of Hollywood and the grit and soot of Chinatown. As the communist witch trials of Joe McCarthy envelop the nation, one person stands out amongst those tabbed as traitors – L.A.'s greatest and most patriotic hero, the Eagle. Could a man once thought to be a protector of America's shores be a Cold War spy for the enemy?

Combining Bilson, DeMeo and Brody's deft characterization with Ordway's classically-styled artwork, RED MENACE transports you to a time when the world stood on the brink of nuclear decimation and heroes that once stood tall crumbled amidst questions of loyalties and character.

Snakes on a Plane: COULD IT HAPPEN HERE!?

I know a lot of the people who can't stop blogging and making jokes about Snakes on a Plane were secretly afraid of the possibility that the movie might not be fiction.

So THANKFULLY we have blogger Debbie Schlussel to ask the question: "'Snakes on a Plane': Could Terrorists Do This?"

Chappelle's Show returns, disappoints

We realize we're late on this (we've been doin' stuff,) but the new Chappelle's Show episodes have been airing, and frankly, we can kind of see why Dave wanted to leave: they aren't that great. In retrospect, it almost had to end this way, didn't it? The first two seasons were too good, too soon. Of course, this doesn't necessarily justify how he left things with Comedy Central, and we're not sure we agree with his take on it (calling it a "bully move,") but we can see why he wouldn't want to do it anymore. Incidentally, the year is more than half over and we still haven't seen a better 2006 movie than Block Party.

We won't post the controversial sketch that may have driven Dave away like Dead Frog did. Instead, here's one about how Tupac is still alive. This should give you an idea of the quality level we're dealing with:

The Hoff

Per Deadspin, David Hasselhoff was kicked out of Wimbledon for being too drunk. That in and of itself is an unfortunate story.

But he may have inadvertently cemented his legacy with his parting words:

"Do you know who I am? I’m The Hoff!"

Awesome.

Grading the cows

You've seen them around town, maybe stopped and looked at them, maybe thought "didn't they do the same thing in Chicago, like, five years ago?" Yup, the cows are still around in Boston. We at Slop Culture offer our grades on each one, with all due respect intended, of course, to the artists involved - photos by Andrew Firestone:

B: Interesting use of texture. Nice that it doesn't have some winking theme going on

B: Simple, bright colors. Looks good

C-plus: A little too "meta" for us, interesting as the factoids may be.

B-minus: Nice enough. The post running up the one cow's leg is interesting.

D-minus: Yes, Boston's subway map looks kind of cool. But come on: it's the T. Nobody likes it, and we don't want to be reminded of that

B-minus: Also meta, but the use of color offsets it a little

A: That's cool. That's something to look at.

A: Also a creative design.

B-plus: We like this one, for some reason. Maybe it's the negative space.

B-minus: There are a lot of "Boston-centric" ones like this, they're all nice, but a little corny.

C: It's a little too "Rush album cover" for us.

C: Someone needs to explain the message here, because we don't get it . . .

C: Ahhhhhhh!

A: Yes!

D: No!
